Women's Basketball Game Notes vs. Quinnipiac

Friars host the Bobcats on Nov. 15 in their 2018-19 home opener.

PROVIDENCE COLLEGE HOSTS QUINNIPIAC IN ITS HOME OPENER... The Providence College women's basketball team will host Quinnipiac in its home opener on Thursday, Nov. 17 at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I.  Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.

FRIARS ALL-ACCESS... Thursday's game against Quinnipiac will be broadcast live via the internet on Friars All-Access (www.Friars.com), which is a subscription-based service.  Play-by-play will be provided by Mike Mancuso.  Live stats also will be provided during the game.  Direct links to the broadcast and live stats are available on the women's basketball schedule (www.Friars.com).

FRIARS ALL-TIME VS. QUINNIPIAC... Providence and Quinnipiac have met six times in the history of the two women's basketball programs.  The all-time series is tied, 3-3.

SCOUTING QUINNIPIAC... Quinnipiac opened the season as the No. 1-ranked mid-major team in the country, according to the National Mid-Major Poll, announced by the College Insider committee.  The Bobcats are currently 1-1 on the season, with a victory over Drexel (56-52) and a loss to Bucknell (75-58).  Quinnipiac is scheduled to play its first seven games on the road and will not host a home game until Dec. 2 (vs. Central Michigan).  The Bobcats are averaging just 57.0 points per game to start the year.  They are shooting 38.5-percent from the floor (47-122), 21.9-percent from three-point territory (7-32) and 52-percent from the foul line (13-25).

PLAYERS TO WATCH... Two-time MAAC Preseason Player of the year Aryn McClure leads the Bobcats in scoring (12.5 ppg) and rebounding (7.5 rpg) through two games.  Jen Fay, a 2018 All-MAAC First-Team honoree, is second in scoring (13.0 ppg) and adds 5.5 rebounds per contest.  Paula Strautmane, who earned All-MAAC Second-Team recognition last season, has contributed 9.5 points and 3.0 rebounds per game to start the year.

A LOOK AT THE BOBCATS' 2017-18 CAMPAIGN... Quinnipiac finished the 2017-18 season with a 28-6 overall record, including a perfect 18-0 mark in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC).  The Bobcats won their fourth MAAC Tournament title in the last six years and advanced to the NCAA Second Round.  Quinnipiac defeated No. 8 seed Miami, 86-72, in the First Round before exiting the tournament with a 71-46 loss to Connecticut. 

LAST MEETING BETWEEN PROVIDENCE AND QUINNIPIAC... The Providence College women's basketball team fell to Quinnipiac, 62-36, on Dec. 6 at TD Bank Sports Center in Hamden, Conn. The Friars, who entered the game shooting 46-percent from the field and were ranked second in the nation in three-point percentage (46-percent), were never able to get it going on the offensive end. The squad posted season lows from the field (.321, 15-23) and from beyond the arc (.111, 2-18) and turned the ball over 22 times to the Bobcats. Providence hit the first bucket of the game, but Quinnipiac went on a 9-0 run to take a 9-2 lead with 4:22 on the clock. Providence halted the run on its next possession, but the Bobcats finished the first quarter with an 8-4 scoring edge to take a 17-8 lead at the break. Quinnipiac maintained control of the game the rest of the way. The lead grew to 16 at halftime (34-18) and swelled to 21 with 2:40 left in the third quarter (46-25).  

FRIARS FALL TO PENN STATE IN SEASON OPENER... The Friars led by as many as 15 points with 3:48 remaining in the third quarter, but fell to Penn State, 74-72 in their season opener on Nov. 8 in University Park, Pa.  Providence held the lead for just over 36 minutes of action, but Penn State used a 23-9 scoring advantage in the fourth quarter to gain a tie the game, 72-72, with 36-seconds left on the clock.  Providence committed a turnover on its next possession and Penn State's Sam Breen was fouled on the other end with 0.4 seconds left.  Breen sank a pair of free throws to give the Nittany Lions their first lead since 4:13 of the first quarter (16-15).  Providence called a timeout to advance the ball to mid-court and draw up a final play.  Freshman Alyssa Geary (Elmhurst, Ill.) converted a bucket off of a lob pass into the post, but the officials waved off the basket after a video review showing the ball was still in her hand as the clock expired.

FOUR FRIARS CRACK DOUBLE DIGITS IN THE SCORING COLUMN AT PENN STATE... Four Friars reached double figures in the scoring column in the season opener at Penn State, led by Jovana Nogic's game-high 18 points.  Freshman Kaela Webb added 15 points off the bench in her collegiate debut.  Maddie Jolin and Chanell Williams each chipped in 10 points.

KAELA WEBB NETS MOST POINTS IN COLLEGIATE DEBUT AT PROVIDENCE SINCE 2013... Freshman guard Kaela Webb came off the bench to score 15 points in her collegiate debut with the Friars against Penn State (Nov. 8).  Her 15 points are the most by a freshman at Providence in their collegiate debut since Sarah Beal '17 posted 20 points vs. UMass Lowell on Nov. 9, 2013. She was 6-11 from the field (.545), including 2-4 shooting from three-point territory.  She also recorded one rebound, two assists and two steals in 23 minutes of action. 

SHARING THE ROCK... Providence dished 17 assists on 29 made field goals in its season opener at Penn State.  Last season, the Friars recorded 17-or-more assists in just two games.  PC dished a season-high 20 assists vs. Savannah State (11/21/17) and 17 assists against Xavier (1/19/18).

PRESEASON EXHIBITION ACTION... The Friars hosted NCAA Division II Assumption in an exhibition game on Nov. 3 in Providence, R.I.  Providence got off to a slow start in the first quarter, trailing 16-13 after 10 minutes of action.  However, Providence settled in and outscored the Greyhounds, 58-35, during the final three quarters to take a decisive, 71-51, victory.  Freshman forward Mary Baskerville (Enfield, Conn.) led the Friars with 15 points on 7-8 shooting from the field and added four rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots.  Seniors Maddie Jolin and Jovana Nogic each recorded 14 points on the day.  Jolin was 4-5 from the field, including 3-4 from beyond the arc and added six assists and a team-best five rebounds.  Nogic was 5-12 from the field, including 4-9 from three-point territory and added four rebounds, two assists and two steals.  Sophomore guard Chanell Williams dished a game-high seven assists and grabbed four boards.  As a team, Providence shot 47.3-percent from the floor (26-55), including 47.6-percent from beyond the arc (10-21).  The Friars had 20 assists on 26 made field goals in the game.

JOVANA NOGIC NAMED TO ANN MEYERS DRYSDALE AWARD WATCH LIST... On Oct. 23, it was announced that Jovana Nogic was named to the 20-player watch list for the Ann Meyers Drysdale Award, which is presented annually to the top shooting guard in NCAA Division I.  It marks the second-straight season that Nogic has been featured on the watch list.

JOVANA NOGIC FEATURED ON 11-PLAYER PRESEASON ALL-BIG EAST TEAM...  Jovana Nogic was named to the 2018-19 Preseason All-BIG EAST Team on Oct. 25 at the league's annual media day at Madison Square Garden in New York City.  Nogic is one of 11 players to earn preseason recognition. It marks the second-straight year that she has earned Preseason All-BIG EAST honors.  Nogic was named an All-BIG EAST Honorable Mention honoree at the conclusion of the 2016-17 season. 

1,000-POINT MILESTONE WITHIN REACH FOR MADDIE JOLIN... Maddie Jolin has recorded 760 career points during her career.  She posted her best offensive season a year ago, totaling 330 points for an average of 10.6 points per game.  Jolin opened the 2018-19 season with 10 points against Penn State on Nov. 8.  She needs 240 points to become the 35th player in program history to score 1,000 points.

NOGIC RANKS 16TH ON FRIARS' ALL-TIME SCORING LIST... Jovana Nogic tallied 18 points in the season opener vs. Penn State (Nov.) 8) and owns 1,258 career points (13.8 ppg) as a Friar. She currently ranks 16th on the Providence's all-time scoring list. With her 18-point performance against the Nittany Lions, Nogic was able to jump two spots on the list, passing Shanya Evans '91 (1,246) and Mandy Saunders '98 (1,256).  She needs just four points to crack the top-15 and overtake Providence College Athletics Hall of Fame inductee Lynn Sheedy '80 (1,261).  

FRIARS RETURN TOP-FOUR SCORERS FROM 2017-18... Providence College returns its top-four scorers from a season ago, led by Jovana Nogic (17.1 ppg) and Maddie Jolin (10.6 ppg).  Clara Che finished third on the team in scoring average (6.9 ppg), followed by Chanell Williams (6.7 ppg).  In all, the four players combined for 1,281 of the team's 1,850 points, accounting for 69.2-percent of the Friars' offense.

PROVIDENCE COLLEGE WELCOMES SIX NEWCOMERS TO THE ROSTER... The Friars' seven returning players from the 2017-18 campaign will be joined by six newcomers on the roster.  First-year players include guards Kaela Webb (Pontiac, Mich.), Earlette Scott (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Maya Klein (Stamford, Conn.), in addition to forwards Sophia Widmeyer (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia), Mary Baskerville (Enfield, Conn.) and Alyssa Geary (Elmhurst, Ill.).

LOOKING BACK AT 2017-18 SEASON... The Friars finished the 2017-18 campaign with a 10-21 overall record and a 3-15 mark in the BIG EAST Conference.  Providence fell to Butler in overtime, 73-67, in the BIG EAST Tournament First Round, held at Wintrust Arena in Chicago, Ill. 

FRIARS PICKED TO FINISH NINTH IN BIG EAST PRESEASON COACHES' POLL...  Providence College was picked to finish ninth in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll, released on Oct. 25 at Madison Square Garden during the league's annual media day.  DePaul and Marquette are co-favorites to win the league title, with each securing five first-place votes and 77 points.

FRIARS CLAIM A WINNING RECORD IN NON-CONFERENCE PLAY IN BACK-TO-BACK SEASONS... The Friars finished non-conference play in 2017-18 with a 7-5 mark and secured a winning record in non-conference action in back-to-back seasons for the first time since the 2010-11 and 2011-12 campaigns.  In 2016-17, Providence finished the non-conference portion of their schedule with an 8-4 record.

DOUBLE-DIGIT WINS... The Friars recorded double-digit wins in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2010-11 and 2011-12.  Last season, Providence recorded 10 wins and in 2016-17 it totaled 12 victories.

PROVIDENCE SET THREE-POINT PERCENTAGE RECORD FOR SECOND-STRAIGHT SEASON... The Friars have set a single-season record for three-point field goal percentage each of the last two seasons.  In 2016-17, Providence shot a school-record 0.374 from beyond the arc (192-514).  Last season, the Friars topped the single-season record book, once again, shooting 0.391 from three-point territory (192-491).

MORE FROM DEEP... In each of the last two seasons, the Friars have connected on 192 three-point field goals.  Providence's 192 three-pointers during the 2017-18 and 2016-17 are tied for the third-most triples in program history for a single season.

FRIARS COME UP JUST SHORT... Ten of the Friars' 21 losses during the 2017-18 season were decided by a single-digit margin, including three games by five points or less.  

BIG EAST ALL-FRESHMAN TEAM SELECTION CHANELL WILLIAMS RETURNS TO COURT FOR SOPHOMORE CAMPAIGN... Providence College point guard Chanell Williams (Bronx, N.Y.) was named a unanimous selection to the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team in 2017-18.  Williams played all 31 games for the Friars and appeared in the starting line-up 17 times.  She averaged 6.7 points, 2.7 rebounds and a team-best 2.6 assists per game.  During BIG EAST Conference regular-season play, Williams averaged 8.7 points, 3.6 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game. Williams was a two-time BIG EAST Freshman of the Week honoree (Jan. 8 and Jan. 22).  She recorded nine double-digit scoring games for the Friars, including eight during BIG EAST action.  The rookie tallied a career-high 16 points against Seton Hall on Jan. 5.  She also posted career highs of seven rebounds vs. Seton Hall (Jan. 26), five assists vs. Yale (Nov. 29) and five steals vs. Marquette (Jan. 10). Williams became the 17th player from Providence College to earn BIG EAST All-Freshman or All-Rookie Team honors, and the first since Sarah Beal in 2014.

MADDIE JOLIN LOOKING TO BUILD OFF OF IMPRESSIVE JUNIOR CAMPAIGN... Last season, Maddie Jolin put together a solid junior campaign.  She finished second among her teammates in scoring (10.6 ppg) and led the Friars in rebounding (4.7 rpg).  Jolin also added 1.8 assists and 1.0 steal per contest.  She found her rhythm from three-point territory and led the team in field-goal percentage from beyond the arc (.439, 66-158).

JOLIN FINISHED SECOND AMONG BIG EAST PLAYERS IN 3PT FIELD-GOAL PERCENTAGE... Maddie Jolin finished second among BIG EAST players in three-point field-goal percentage last season (.439, 66-158).  Her percentage also ranked 21st among NCAA Division I players.

JOVANA NOGIC NOTCHED THIRD-HIGHEST SCORING TOTAL BY A JUNIOR IN PROGRAM HISTORY... Jovana Nogic's 513 points in 2017-18 marked the third-highest single-season scoring total by a junior in program history.  The top-two on the list include, Friars' all-time leading scorer Tracy Lis (759) and Nadine Malcolm (628).  Additionally, Nogic was the first player to eclipse 500 points in a single season since Chelsea Marandola (613) during the 2009-10 campaign.

NOGIC HOLDS SINGLE-SEASON RECORD FOR THREE-POINTERS... Jovana Nogic set the Providence College single-season record for three-pointers, with 91, during the 2016-17 season. The previous record was held by Julie Wheeler '98, which she set during the 1994-95 season, with 82.   

NEARING CAREER RECORD FOR THREE POINTERS... The Providence College record for three-pointers made in a career was set by Julie Wheeler '98, with 252, in 101 games (1994-98).  Senior guard Jovana Nogic has hit 230-557 attempts from three-point territory (.413).  Over the course of her career, Nogic has averaged 77 three-pointers per season.

NOGIC RANKS AMONG NCAA ACTIVE CAREER LEADERS FROM BEYOND THE ARC... Jovana Nogic ranks eighth among active NCAA Division I players in career three-point percentage.  Nogic has hit 41.3-percent of her attempts from beyond the arc (234-566).  Additionally, she ranks 18th among active NCAA career leaders in three-pointers made per game (2.57) and 13th in three-point field goals made (234).  

FRIARS IN OVERTIME GAMES UNDER JIM CROWLEY... Providence is 2-4 in overtime games under the direction of second-year Friars Head Coach Jim Crowley.  In his first season with the program (2016-17), Providence posted a 1-2 mark in overtime games.  In 2017-18, Providence compiled a 1-2 mark in overtime.  The Friars are 2-0 in overtime games when they score 90+ points, and they are 0-3 in overtime vs. BIG EAST Conference opponents.

WHAT'S NEXT... The Friars return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 21 against Sacred Heart.  The game will be played at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. and tip-off is slated for Noon.
