PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball team defeated Assumption College, 71-51, on Saturday, Nov. 3 in their lone exhibition game of the season at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. The Friars earned the win with three players reaching double figures, led by freshman forward
Mary Baskerville's (Enfield, Conn.) game-high 15 points.
The Greyhounds started converting from deep early, jumping to a 9-3 lead after shooting 3-4 from three-point range to start the game. Providence started to fight back, ending the first quarter on an 8-2 run and cutting the lead to three (16-13).
Preseason All-BIG EAST Team member, Jovan Nogic (Belgrade, Serbia) started to make her presence known in the second quarter. Nogic knocked down two threes to give the Friars an 18-16 lead with 9:09 left in the second quarter. Providence and Assumption traded buckets for most of the second quarter, leaving Providence with a 27-26 lead at the 3:26 mark in the half. Nogic and
Maddie Jolin (Rehoboth, Mass.) hit back-to-back threes to increase the lead to seven. Providence made six of their last seven field goal attempts to head into the break with a 37-33 lead.
The Friars benefited from a 17-0 run to begin the third quarter, resulting from six points out of
Maddie Jolin, including an and-one three-point basket. Providence outscored the Greyhounds, 22-10 in the third quarter to take a 59-43 lead after 30 minutes of play. Providence outscored Assumption in the fourth quarter 12-8 to close out their win by a score of 71-51.
In addition to Baskerville's 15 points, Nogic added 14 points and Jolin also chipped in 14 points. For the game, the Friars shot 26-55 (47.3 percent) from the field, including 10-21 (47.6 percent) from three-point territory.
Meghan Cramb led Assumption with 14 points.
The Friars will open their regular season schedule on Thursday, Nov. 8 at Penn State. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. in University Park, Pa.
