PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Providence College volleyball team won its match against Bryant University in five sets on Sept. 20. The Friars now move to 12-4 on the season while Bryant drops to 8-9.
The Friars had a slow start to the match falling as far behind as 15-5. A strong attack, led by freshman Jenae Alderson (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) and sophomore Megan Onyundo (Woodbridge, Va.), brought Providence back to within two points with the opportunity to cut the lead to one point. Providence dropped the set but momentum was certainly behind the Friars. Michelle Cruz (Midland Park, N.J.) had a strong set, tallying 10 digs.
Providence fell behind early in the second set but made a strong push halfway through. The Friars then went on a six-point run to jump from a 15-14 deficit to a 20-15 lead. Providence eventually took the set, 25-21. Alderson and Allison Impellizeri (Seaford, N.Y.) each had three kills. Onyundo was strong defensively; totaling seven kills in set two.
The third set was a back and forth affair, with Providence pulling out the set, 25-19. Onyundo and freshman Cayla Veverka (Collegeville, Pa.) each tallied four kills.
The fourth set was another back and forth effort with Bryant pulling away. The Friars clawed back within four, led by Veverka's six kills but ultimately Providence fell in the set 25-20.
The fifth and final set continued the tough back and forth grind. The game was tied at 10 points and neither team was willing to give up two points in a row. The set continued to past 15 points. In the end, the Friars won the set, and match, 20-18.
The match saw many Friars achieve season or career bests. Onyundo, Veverka and Alderson all achieved career highs in kills with 23, 18 and 15 respectively. Chicyia Clark (Huntington Beach, Calif.) also achieved a career high in assists with 56 and Cruz tied her career high with 35 digs. Onyundo also achieved a double-double as she tallied 18 digs, a career best. Kara Mason (Boca Raton, Fla.) also achieved a career high in digs with 15.
The Friars return to action on Sept. 23 with a match against DePaul. This will be Providence's first BIG EAST match of the season.
