PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College volleyball team was defeated by DePaul, 3-2 (25-20, 23-25, 25-23, 19-25, 15-3) in its first BIG EAST contest on Friday night at Alumni Hall.
Providence (12-5, 0-1 BIG EAST) jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the opening set but the Blue Demons (7-6, 1-0 BIG EAST) used two separate 4-0 runs to help them gain an 18-14 lead. DePaul later scored five-straight points to bring the score to 23-16. With the score 24-17, the Friars scored three-in-row to pull within four, but DePaul registered the next point to win the set (25-20). Sophomore Allison Impellizeri (Seaford, N.Y.) paced the Friars in the stanza with five kills (.714 hitting percentage).
DePaul lead by as many as five (12-7) in the second set, however, Providence battled back within one point (16-15) and eventually tied the game 23-23. The Friars then took the next two points for a 25-23 second-set win. Impellizeri again led the Friars in the set, posting four kills. Freshmen Jenae Alderson (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) and Cayla Veverka (Collegeville, Pa.) and sophomore Megan Onyundo (Woodbridge, Va.) contributed three kills apiece.
In the third set, the two team's traded points with 10 ties in the set. With the score 21-21, The Blue Demons were able to capture four of the next six points to narrowly claim the set (25-23) and hold a 2-1 match lead. During the set, senior Michelle Cruz (Midland Park, N.J.) registered her 13th dig of the match, which gave her the all-time digs record at Providence, with 1,788 career digs, surpassing Cassie Muzzonigro '12 (1,787) who previously held the mark. Onyundo led Friars in scoring for the third set, with four kills.
The fourth set also started off back-and-forth, with the Friars eventually distancing themselves from the Blue Demons, at 21-16 lead, powering them to a 25-19 set win. For the third set, Impellizeri carried the kill lead along with Veverka with four. Impellizeri and Veverka also teamed up for a combined three blocks.
DePaul shot out to a 10-1 lead in the fifth set and only allowed two more points by the Friars to win the deciding set, 15-3, to claim the conference match.
For the match, Impellizeri led the Friars with 15 kills and seven blocks. Onyundo also registered double-digit kills with 11. Cruz, the new digs record holder, finished the contest with 21 digs to lead Providence defensively. Junior Chicyia Clark (Huntington Beach, Calif.) recorded 40 assists.
DePaul was led by Brittany Maxwell and Caitlyn Coffey, who had 17 and 11 kills, respectively. Colleen Smith tallied 41 assists while Lexi Chanos added 12 digs.
The Friars resume conference action on Sunday, Sept. 25 against Marquette at 1:00 p.m. at Alumni Hall.
