PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Providence College volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (21-25, 14-25, 18-25) decision against Marquette in a Big East Conference contest at Alumni Hall on Sept. 25. Providence fell to 12-6 (0-2) while Marquette moves to 10-4 (1-1) on the season.

The first set had Providence with a narrow 12-11 lead before a 4-1 run, capped by a Marquette ball handling error, forced the Golden Eagles to call a timeout with PC leading 16-12. Marquette rallied with a 6-1 run of its own and took their first lead since the first point on a hitting error by the Friars. The two teams then traded leads for the remainder of the set with Marquette taking the 22-20 lead on a kill by sophomore Jenna Rosenthal. Marquette closed out the first set by a score of 25-21 after block assists by Rosenthal and redshirt sophomore Taylor Louis closed out the set. The Golden Eagles hit .240 for the set and forced the Friars into eight hitting errors. Freshman Cayla Veverka (Collegeville, Pa.) led the way for Providence with six kills while Rosenthal had five kills in the set for Marquette. Michelle Cruz (Midland Park, N.J.) and Kayla Fitzgerald (Redlands, Calif.) were both strong defensively, recording 10 and 8 digs respectively.

In the second set, Marquette raced out to the early 11-5 lead after a service ace by freshman Madeline Mosher. A kill by Louis put the Golden Eagles up 15-9 and forced a Providence timeout. Marquette then cruised to the 25-14 win in the set to take the 2-0 lead in the contest. Freshman Jenae Alderson (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) led the way for PC in the set with four kills while Taylor and redshirt senior Meghan Niemann each had four kills in the set for Marquette.

Marquette once again controlled the action early in the third set, leading by as many as four points on several occasions, including a 15-11 advantage after a kill by Louis that forced a Providence timeout. The Golden Eagles led by as many as six points down the stretch before closing out the 3-0 match victory with a 25-18 win in the set.

Providence was led by Veverka with 12 kills while Alderson added 12 kills and two digs for the Friars. Junior Chicyia Clark (Huntington Beach, Calif.) recorded 36 set assists while senior Cruz tallied a team-best 13 digs in the setback.

Louis put down a match-high 14 kills with six digs and two blocks while Neimann and Rosenthal each registered eight kills in the win for the Golden Eagles. Senior Sara Blaiser notched a double-double with 32 set assists and 17 digs for Marquette.
