PROVIDENCE R.I. - The Providence College volleyball team returns home after four away matches to take on BIG EAST rivals Seton Hall and St. John's. The Friars will take on Seton Hall on Oct. 14 at 7:00 p.m. and St. John's on Oct. 16 at 1:00 p.m. There will be live streams and live stats for both games. SCOUTING PROVIDENCE: Providence has a 12-10 (0-6) record to this point in the season. The Friars are coming off losses against Georgetown and Villanova. Providence looks to use home court advantage to secure their first BIG EAST victory of the season
The Friars' attack is being led by mainly underclassmen. Sophomore Megan Onyundo (Woodbridge, Va.) is leading Providence with 209 kills (3.03 kps). Sophomore Allison Impellizeri (Seaford, N.Y.), senior Kayla Fitzgerald (Redlands, Calif.) and freshman Cayla Veverka (Collegeville, Pa.) have all been strong, as well, recording 171 (2.31 kps), 159 (2.06 kps) and 155 (2.15 kps) kills, respectively. Freshman Jenae Alderson (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) has been solid as of late as well, recording 98 kills (2.13 kps) in only 46 sets played. Chicyia Clark (Huntington Beach, Calif.) has set the Friars' attack all season, recording 737 assists (9.57 aps). Fitzgerald and Clark have been effective on the serve this season, ranking 4th and 5th in the BIG EAST for service aces per set with .32 sa/s and .31 sa/s, respectively.
Providence's defense has been the team's standout quality all season. The Friars are first in the BIG EAST for opponents hitting percentage (1.70) and third for digs per set (15.8). Michelle Cruz (Midland Park, N.J.) has been the leader of the Friars' defensive efforts as she is third in the BIG EAST for digs per set with 4.91. Cruz is also number six in the NCAA for total digs with 398. Clark, Fitzgerald and Onyundo have also been essential defensively, tallying 175, 169 and 165 digs, respectively. Impellizeri has been a force on the front line tallying 82 blocks (1.11 bps) this season, good for the fourth best block percentage in the BIG EAST.
SCOUTING SETON HALL: The Seton Hall volleyball team has a record of 9-11 (3-4) this season. The Pirates are currently on a three match losing streak after dropping matches to St. John's, DePaul, and Marquette.
The Pirate's attack is being led by Danielle Schroeder, Cherise Hennigan and Abby Thelen. Schroeder leads the team with 226 kills (3.01 kps) while Hennigan and Thelen have 185 (2.76 kps) and 163 (2.67 kps), respectively. Setting the attack is Sophia Coffey. Coffey has 515 assists (6.87 aps) this season.
Defensively, Seton Hall ranks last in the BIG EAST for opponents hitting percentage with .241. Tessa Fournier, however, has been solid for the Pirates recording 348 digs. Fournier is currently ranked first in the BIG EAST in digs per set with 5.27.
SCOUTING ST. JOHN'S: The St. John's volleyball team has a record of 12-8 (3-4) this season. The Red Storm are coming off of a 1-1 weekend. St. John's lost to Marquette on Oct. 7 before defeating DePaul on Oct. 8.
The Red Storm's attack is being led by Margherita Bianchin, Gaia Traballi and Julia Cast. Bianchin leads the team with 227 kills (3.07 kps). Traballi and Cast have recorded 226 kills (3.05 kps) and 218 kills (2.99 kps), respectively. Erica Di Maulo has set the attack for St. John's all season. Di Maulo has 770 assists on the season and her 10.4 assist per set ratio is third in the BIG EAST.
The Red Storm are currently ranked second to last in the BIG EAST in digs per set. St. John's only tallies 12.3 digs per set to this point in the season. Di Maulo leads St. John's with 157 digs (2.12 dps) this season. St. John's 3.1 blocks per set is currently ranked first in the BIG EAST. Danisha Moss factors heavily into St. John's blocking success. Moss is first in the BIG EAST for blocks per set with 1.56 and has tallied 114 total blocks on the season.
