BOSTON, Mass. - Providence College men's hockey players Jon Gillies (South Portland, Maine) and Trevor Mingoia (Fairport, N.Y.) have been selected as semifinalists for the 63rd annual Walter Brown Award, which goes to the best American-born Div. I college hockey player in New England and is awarded by the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston.

Gillies, a junior goaltender, is 14-9-1 on the season with a 2.06 goals-against average and a .931 save percentage. He is tied for the NCAA lead with four shutouts. In Hockey East play, he leads the league with a 1.71 goals-against average and a .947 save percentage. In Providence's weekend sweep of UMass Lowell (Jan. 23-24), he posted his 50th career win in a Friar uniform, joining Mario Proulx `84 (64-32-2) and Bill Milner `79 (50-37-6) as the only Friars with at least 50 wins. He was named the Hockey East goaltender of the month for November and December. Gillies was also a Walter Brown Award Semifinalist in 2013.

Mingoia is having a breakout season for the Friars, leading the team in goals (13) and points (24) as well as power-play goals (6). His 13 goals, 11 assists and 24 points are career-high totals. He was named the Hockey East Player of the Week (Nov. 17) and has posted five multi-point games this season. He notched a career-high two goals in the Friars' 5-1 win at Northeastern (Dec. 5) and in Providence's 7-3 win at UMass Lowell (Jan. 23). He also had an assist in that win at UMass Lowell for a career-high three points.

The Walter Brown Award was established in 1953 by the members of the 1933 Massachusetts Rangers, the first American team ever to win the World Championship Tournament. Brown coached the Rangers to the title in Prague, Czechoslovakia, that year; the team defeated Canada 2-1 in overtime in the championship game.

The Gridiron Club will announce the finalists and winner of the 63rd Walter Brown Award in March, following league playoffs and before the start of NCAA Tournament play. The award will be presented to the winner at the New England College Hockey Writers' Dinner in April.

Four Friars have won the Walter Brown Award, including Ron Wilson (1974-75), Tim Army (1984-85), Rob Gaudreau (1991-92) and Mike Omicioli (1998-99).
