PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- In the first edition of the 2014-15 national polls, the Providence College men's hockey team was ranked third in the USCHO.com and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls. The preseason editions of the polls were released on Monday (Sept. 29). The Friars received two first-place votes in the USCHO.com poll.
In the national polls, Providence is joined by Hockey East counterparts Boston College (4/4), Notre Dame (12/10), Northeastern (16/RV), UMass Lowell (17/RV), New Hampshire (19/RV) and Boston University (20/RV). Additional ranked teams on Providence's 2014-15 schedule include North Dakota (2/2) and Colgate (7/5).
In 2014, the Friars (22-11-6, 11-7-2 HEA) returned to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2001. With a 4-0 first round blanking of Quinnipiac (March 28), Providence posted its first NCAA Tournament win since 1991 and advanced to the NCAA East Regional Final. The Friars also made a third-consecutive Hockey East Semifinal appearance for the first time in program history.
The Friars' top-five leading scorers from 2013-14 return for the 2014-15 campaign, led by senior forward Ross Mauermann (Janesville, Wis.) and junior forward Nick Saracino (St. Louis, Mo.). Mauermann totaled 19 goals and 17 assists for a career-high 36 points marking the third consecutive season he led the team in scoring. Saracino's season included 10 goals and 18 assists for a career-high 28 points.
In net, junior Jon Gillies (South Portland, Maine) and sophomore Nick Ellis (Millersville, Md.) combined to play all 39 games last season and the duo returns for 2014-15. Gillies, a 2013 All-American, has the program's top career goals-against average (2.12) and also ranks first in the Friar record book with nine career shutouts.
The Friars were ranked for the majority of the 2013-14 season, reaching as high as No. 3 in both of the polls (Oct. 28 and Nov. 18). It marked the first time Providence moved inside the top-five since Oct. 1, 2001.
Last week at Hockey East Media Day (Sept. 22), the Friars were selected to finish first in the annual preseason coaches' poll. Providence opens the 2014-15 season on Oct. 10 at Ohio State, while its first regular season home game will be against Hockey East foe Boston University on Friday, Oct. 31.
