BOSTON, Mass. -- The No. 4/5 Providence College men's hockey team practiced at Fenway Park on Friday afternoon in preparation for tomorrow's 4:00 p.m. game against Merrimack at Citi Frozen Fenway 2014.
Providence, which swept Merrimack earlier this season in a weekend home-and-home Hockey East series (Nov. 8-9), will be playing in its first ever outdoor game, while Merrimack will be making its first Frozen Fenway appearance. Following the Friars' non-conference game against the Warriors tomorrow, Notre Dame and Boston College will play a Hockey East contest, slated to begin at 7:30 p.m.
In tomorrow's Frozen Fenway game, Providence will debut throwback uniforms in honor of the 50th anniversary of the 1963-64 Friar squad that won the ECAC Championship and advanced to the Frozen Four. It marked the first time Providence won a conference title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. That team also featured the program's first All-American, defenseman Larry Kish '64.
The game against Merrimack will be broadcast live by NESN, with Tom Caron handling play-by-play duties, Craig Janey providing color and Jameson Coyle serving as the rinkside reporter.
Providence (13-3-3) has been ranked in the top-10 for the last 11 weeks and its 13 first half wins (Oct.-Jan. 31) tied the program record, originally set in 1989-90. Junior forward Ross Mauermann leads the Friars with 27 points (13-14-27), including a career-high 13 goals. Mauermann has a seven-game point streak (3-6-9) and is tied for the national lead with four game-winning goals.
