Track and Field Shines at New England Championships

BOSTON, MASS. - Several members of the men's and women's track and field teams competed in the New England Indoor Championships, held this weekend at Boston University.

On the women's side, junior Mary Kate Champagne (Plattsburg, N.Y.) continued her impressive indoor campaign with a second place finish in the 3000-meters. Her time of 9:48.07 was her fastest posting of the season and less than half a second off of her personal best.

The Friars also received an eighth -place performance from junior Sara Graney (Palisades, N.Y.), who finished the 5000-meters in 17:56.00. Meanwhile the 4 x 400-meter relay team of Christina Lavigne (Shelton, Conn.), Molly Shapiro (New Fairfield, Conn.), Meg Van Name (Stamford, Conn.) and Julie Wolf (Holden, Mass.) earned 12th in 4:00.15. Lavigne performed double duty, grabbing 13th in the triple jump with a leap of 11.15 meters.

The Friar men achieved two, top-three placements. Freshman Alex Wallace (Waipukarau, New Zealand) took third in the mile run, clocking in at 4:13.97.

In the 3000-meters, freshman Jon Hopkins (Bridgend, England) was third with a time of 8:32.16, just ahead of the sixth place effort of teammate Corey Brunelle (Woonsocket, R.I.), who crossed in 8:33.05.

Friar sophomore Ahmed Ali shattered his previous time in the 5000-meters. His posting of 14:49.31, which earned him seventh overall, was nearly 20 seconds faster than his 5000 run last month on the BU track.

Other highlights included senior Brian Stannard (East Longmeadow, Mass.) running his second fastest time of the season in the 400 (49.41), just ahead of teammate Nik Andrews (49.80). Elsewhere, senior Thomas Manglaviti (Southhampton, N.Y.) grabbed 14th in the 200-meter dash (22.60).

For the team totals, the Friar men finished 13th out of 35 programs. The PC women were 17th out of 34.

Both Providence programs will compete next Saturday and Sunday, March 5 and 6, with the women taking part on the ECAC Championships, and the men tackling the IC4A Championships.
