PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College volleyball team picked up a three-set sweep of St. Francis (N.Y.) in their first match at the seventh annual Friar Classic at Mullaney Gymnasium. The sweep (25-11, 25-16, 25-19) improves the Friars to 2-8 on the season, while the Terriers fall to 3-8.
The Friars were led by a trio of upperclassmen. Senior co-captain Emily Morris (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) and junior Lauren Hendel (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) each registered nine kills, while reigning America East Player of the Week Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.) notched eight kills. Morris and Fletcher paced the squad, each hitting at a .333 clip, while the Friars hit .260 as a squad.
Defensively, Morris led the way with 12 digs, while junior Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.) recorded 11 digs. Junior setter Carly Morrison (Larkspur, Calif.) also posted nine digs in addition to her 26 assists. Morris also led the Friar service game, picking up four service aces while Hendel added three.
Things were going well out of the gate for head coach Margot Royer-Johnson's squad, as Providence jumped out to a 15-5 lead in the first set. A timeout by St. Francis failed to stem the tide and the Friars cruised to an opening set win as a Morris ace and two kills by junior Shelagh Dolan (Westford, Mass.) put the set away 25-11.
The Friars again jumped out to a lead in the second set, with Hendel picking up a pair of service aces and helping Providence to a 7-2 lead. After a pair of kills by St. Francis' Gina Giles and a kill from Anisa Lila, Royer-Johnson called timeout and the Friars responded, with the service game of Hendel again serving as the catalyst. She staked Providence to an 18-14 lead and they would never look back. The set was again clinched with Morris at the serving line, this time with kills from Hendel, Dolan and Morris, herself, to close out the set 25-16.
The third set was a back-and-forth affair that saw ties at 7-7 and 15-15. An ace by Fletcher gave the Friars a lead they would not relinquish and back-to-back aces by Morris helped build a 21-17 lead before sophomore Julia Claudy (Kennett Square, Pa.) notched her first kill of the season to seal the match with a 25-19 win.
The Friars return to action tomorrow at the Friar Classic when they take on Coppin State at 11:00 a.m. and Fairleigh Dickinson at 5:00 p.m.
