PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College volleyball team (4-8, 0-0) picked up a pair of wins today at the seventh annual Friar Classic to capture the tournament championship. Providence picked up a sweep of Coppin State in the morning match (25-21, 25-19, 25-14) before capping the tournament with a sweep of Fairleigh Dickinson (25-18, 25-19, 25-22).

Providence junior Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.) picked up tournament MVP honors, registering 39 kills and hitting .329 on the weekend. She saved her best performance for last, notching 16 kills while hitting at a blistering .367 clip. The Friars also placed two on the all-tournament team, as sophomore Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.) recorded 4.33 digs per set on the weekend and junior setter Carly Morrison averaged 7.67 assists per set for the tournament.

Providence 3, Coppin State 0 The Friars struggled a bit to get things going in the first set, which saw ten ties and five lead changes. The final tie came at 19-19 before freshman Emily Hall (Canal Winchester, Ohio) notched an ace to give the Friars a 22-20 lead. They would not look back and won the set 25-21. The second set saw Providence lead from start-to-finish, aided by 12 Eagle errors. The service game of Muzzonigro helped the Friars jump out to 5-1 lead and Providence rolled to a 25-19 win. Providence again led for the entire third set, but this time it was the Friar attack game earning the win, as they hit .250 as a squad to get the 25-14 win.

For the match, Providence was led by Fletcher, who notched eight kills, while junior Lauren Hendel (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) added five. The back row pair of Muzzonigro and senior Emily Morris (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) led the defense with 11 digs each.

Providence 3, Fairleigh Dickinson 0 The Friars clinched the tournament title with a three set-win over Fairleigh Dickinson. Fletcher led the way with 16 kills in the match, while setter Carly Morrison added nine kills. Morrison also notched 25 assists and six digs.

The first set was back-and-forth in the early going, featuring a pair of ties and a lead change, but the Friars were finally able to pull away and build a lead on a couple of errors by the Knights. Providence clinched the match when Morrison notched a kill from Morris to take the frame 25-18.

The second set saw Providence slowly build a lead, before taking the set 25-19. Morrison notched four kills in the set, mostly on dumps from the setter's position that found an opening. Fletcher also posted four kills in the set.

The third set brought a little more drama to the gym, as it featured eleven ties and six lead changes. With the Friars trailing 22-19, Fletcher notched a kill giving the serve to Morrison and she would not relinquish control. An attack error by the Knights was followed by a Fairleigh Dickinson timeout, but it would not matter. Freshman Anne Powers (La Selva Beach, Calif.) posted a kill, Morrison served an ace and there was one more Fairleigh Dickinson error before the reliable combination of a set from Morrison and a kill from Fletcher sealed the match, 25-22.
