PROVIDENCE, R.I. -
The Providence College men's and women's swimming and diving team announced their 2009-10 award winners during their 26th annual end-of-the-year banquet on Sunday, April 18.
The Cindi Luciani Award was given to senior captain Carrie Lamb (New Paltz, N.Y.). Named for Cindi Luciani '91, this award honors the women's Most Valuable Student-Athlete in dual and championship meet competition, as voted by team members and coaching staff. Lamb provided steady leadership as captain while also putting the finishing touches on one of the best careers ever by a Friar. She capped off her outstanding season by qualifying and competing in the BIG EAST Championships. Lamb scored 199.25 points for the Friars this season, moving her to 8th place all-time.
Seniors Mathew Card (Bow, N.H.) and Mike Loftis (Branford, Conn.) were honored with the Horace Bowden Award. Named for Horace Bowden '89, this award honors the men's Most Valuable Student-Athlete in dual and championship meet competition, as voted by the team members and coaching staff. Card and Loftis led the Friars in scoring for a second consecutive year as well as earned impressive individual accolades. Card became the first Friar to earn recognition as Big East Swimmer of the Week and set a school record in the 50 meter freestyle in January. Loftis capped-off his remarkable career with school records in both the 100 meter and 100 yard butterfly. Card climbed to number two on the all-time scoring list, while Loftis graduates as number four all-time for the Friars.
Erin Nanna (Westwood, Mass.) and Chris Morales (Ridgewood, N.J.) received the O'Neill Family Award. Created in 2008, the O'Neill Family Award honors the most valuable female and male freshmen athletes in dual and championship meet competition, as voted by the team members and coaching staff. Nanna led the team in scoring and qualified for the BIG EAST Championships in four separate events. Morales showed tremendous versatility during the year, swimming distance freestyle, IM and butterfly, helping to make a strong contribution to the team's efforts. He also qualified for the BIG EAST Championships in four events.
Junior Sarah Riley (Berwyn, Pa.) and senior Owen Hughes (Portland, Maine) were recognized as the Most Improved Female Athlete and Most Improved Male Athlete, respectively. This award honors the student-athlete who has improved the most in his and her specialty events, as voted by team members and coaching staff. Riley stepped up to swim the butterfly events for the team and continued to improve her times in her specialty event, the breaststroke. Hughes was rewarded for his commitment to year-round training as he helped the Friars set a school relay record while qualifying individually for the BIG EAST Championships.
Senior Ryann Dillon (Downington, Pa.) was honored with the Sears Diving Award. Named for Patrick Sears '88 and Kevin Sears '93, this award honors the diver who, selected by the coaching staff, makes an outstanding contribution to the sport of diving at Providence College. Dillon led a young and talented diving squad both in and out of the water as she put together the best scoring season of her collegiate career. In addition to the Sears Diving Award, Dillon recently was recognized for her outstanding performance in the classroom during the 4th Annual Student-Athlete Academic Awards. Dillon has earned a cumulative grade point average above 3.5 during her time at Providence College.
Junior Alexis Fatigati (New Milford, N.J.) and senior Tim Reilly (Floral Park, N.Y.) were both given the David Hardy Coach's Award. Named for David Hardy '89, this award honors the male and female student-athletes who exhibit those qualities which Hardy brought to the Providence Swimming and Diving teams: loyalty, dedication, good sportsmanship and outstanding effort, both academically and athletically. Fatigati produced another outstanding season for the Friars, once again qualifying and competing at the BIG EAST Championships. Reilly capped-off an impressive career for the Friars and graduates owning the school record in the 1500 meter freestyle and ranks third place overall in career scoring.
