FRIARS TRAVEL TO UNH... Providence College will complete the season series against the 15th-ranked University of New Hampshire Wildcats on Friday, February 12 at the Whittemore Center in Durham, N.H.
SERIES HISTORY VERSUS UNH... In 139 meetings between the two teams, the Wildcats hold a 75-50-14 lead, including a 48-19-5 mark in New Hampshire. The Wildcats have won the first two meetings this season at Schneider Arena, including a 3-2 overtime victory on January 22. The Friars are seeking their first win over the Wildcats since February 24, 2007 when they earned a 7-1 triumph in Providence. The Friars are also looking to earn their first triumph at the Whittemore Center since March 12, 2004.
SCOUTING UNH... The Wildcats are coming off a pair of losses at the University of Maine last weekend. UNH was defeated, 3-2, on Friday, February 5 and then fell, 6-3, on Saturday, February 6. Phil DeSimone scored one goal in each game for the Wildcats. Bobby Butler leads the team in scoring with 37 points on 18 goals and 19 assists, while Blake Kessel is second with 30 points on six goals and 24 assists. In goal, Brian Foster has played in 26 games and has a 3.14 goals against average and a .903 save percentage.
FRIAR QUICK NOTES... • The game against No. 15 UNH will mark the Friars' fifth consecutive against a ranked opponent. • PC ended a six-game losing streak with a 1-1 overtime tie against Vermont on Saturday. • The Friars are averaging 33.3 shots in their wins and 29.0 shots in their losses this season. • Sophomore David Brown (Centennial, Colo.), who missed 11 consecutive games, has one assist in each of the last two contests.
O'CONNOR WITH THE HOT HAND... Junior Ian O'Connor (Londonderry, N.H.) has scored one goal in four of the last seven games and has one point in five of the last eight games for the Friars. For the season, O'Connor ranks third on the team with seven goals and is tied for seventh with nine points.
FRIAR PENALTY KILL AMONG THE TOP 20... The Friars have thwarted 41 of their opponents' last 47 power-play opportunities. The Friars had a streak in which they killed off 18 straight penalties, but the streak ended on January 19 at Northeastern. PC ranks 18th in the country on the penalty kill (104-124 - 83.9%).
STINGY DEFENSE... Providence College ranks third in Hockey East in team defense, allowing 2.81 goals per game. PC also ranks second on the penalty kill (83.9 %) and fifth in goals allowed (76).
SECOND PERIOD SUCCESS... In the last 10 games in which the Friars have scored 16 goals, 10 have been scored in the second period. PC scored three times against Maine (1/16) in the second, including one on the power play. The night before, PC also scored three goals in the second versus Boston University with two coming on the man advantage. For the season, PC has scored 25 of its 57 goals in the second period.
LAST TIME OUT... Providence College earned a 1-1 overtime tie against No. 17 Vermont Saturday night in a Hockey East game played at Schneider Arena. Senior John Cavanagh (Warwick, R.I.) scored at 16:18 of the first period and sophomore goaltender Alex Beaudry (Cumberland, Ontario) stopped 28 shots. Vermont took a 1-0 lead at 8:07 of the first period. Providence evened the score at 16:18 as it converted on its second power-play chance of the night. John Cavanagh attempted to play a pass through the crease, but the puck bounced off a Vermont defenseman and into the net. David Brown and junior Kyle MacKinnon (Walnut, Calif.) assisted on the goal. The Friars outshot the Catamounts, 33-29.
