Swimming & Diving Beat Syracuse, Split With Maine

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -

The Providence College men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed against Maine and Syracuse on Friday, January 15 and Saturday, January 16 in Taylor Natatorium. The men's team used record breaking times from their seniors to defeat both, Maine (157-94) and Syracuse (172-73). The women's squad downed Syracuse (137-34), but fell to Maine (143-73).

The men broke three school records in the dual meet. Seniors Mathew Card (Bow, N.H.), Owen Hughes (Portland, Maine), Dave Wilson (Chelmsford, Mass.), and sophomore Matt Green (Westfield, N.J.) teamed-up to break the 200 freestyle relay record in a time of 1:38.56. In addition to breaking the school record in the 200 freestyle relay, Card broke the school record in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.66. Senior Mike Loftis also had a strong contribution for the Friars, breaking the school record in the 100 butterfly in a time of 57.78.

Freshmen divers Allie Black (Mystic, Conn.), Ben Kardian (Valhalla, N.Y.), Amie Fracker (Trumbull, Conn.) and junior diver James Cebulski (Trumbull, Conn.) qualified for the BIG EAST Championships in February. Fracker (264.60 points) and Black (253.42) finished 1-2 for the women, while Kardian (287.85) and Cebulski (243.90) did the same for the men.

The women were led by freshman Erin Nanna (Westwood, Mass.) who won the 50 and 100 freestyle events. Nanna outstretched Carmen Linden of Maine in both events, finishing with an official time of 28.29 in the 50 and 1:01.99 in the 100.

With the wins, the men's team improves to 4-2. The women's team earned their first win in head-to-head competition and is now 1-5 on the season. Each team is now 1-0 in BIG EAST competition.

The Friars are back in the pool on Friday, January 22 as they travel to Philadelphia, Pa. to take on the Villanova Wildcats in BIG EAST Conference play. The meet will start at 5:00 p.m.
