PROVIDENCE, R.I. -

The Providence College men's and women's swimming and diving teams return to action on Friday, January 15 as the Friars face the University of Maine Black Bears and BIG EAST foe Syracuse in a dual meet at PC's Taylor Natatorium. The meet will start at 5:00 p.m. on Friday and continue on Saturday, January 16 at 11:00 a.m.

The Friars are coming off their annual winter training trip held in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The teams spent one week, from Tuesday, January 5 to Tuesday, January 12, in the Caribbean.

The teams last competed at the Harold Anderson Invitational held on December 5, 2009 on the campus of URI in Kingston, R.I. The men had a strong showing at the event, placing second out of five schools. The women's squad placed fifth in the meet.

The Friar men will look to freshmen Eric Burtchell (Pawtucket, R.I.) in the freestyle events and Ben Kardian (Valhalla, N.Y.) in the diving events to lead the way. Senior leaders Mathew Card (Bow, N.H.) and Mike Loftis (Branford, Conn.) will look to improve on their times in the butterfly events in preparation for the BIG EAST Championships in February. The men's team has split the last two meetings with Maine.

The women's team will be anchored by senior captain Carrie Lamb (New Paltz, N.Y.) in the backstroke events. Lamb continues to move up the all-time points list at Providence as she has recently become one of the top-15 scorer's ever to swim at Providence. The women's team has dropped the last two decisions in meets against Maine.
