PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College Associate Vice President/Athletics Director Robert G. Driscoll, Jr. announced today (Wednesday, July 9, 2008) that Head Men's Ice Hockey Coach Tim Army has signed a multi-year contract extension to remain with the Friars through 2013.

Army embarks on his fourth season as head coach in 2008-09. He has led the program to three-consecutive appearances in the HOCKEY EAST Tournament. A year ago, Providence was ranked as high as No. 11 in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll on February 4, 2008. Of the programs 14 victories on the season, 10 were against ranked teams, including a 5-3 victory over No. 5 Michigan State on December 29, as part of the Great Lakes Invitational. Providence also posted two wins at No. 9 Boston College, marking the first time since 1996 that PC has posted two victories at Kelley Rink. The Eagles went on to win the NCAA title.

"Coach Army has given so much of himself to the men's ice hockey program over the years, as a player, an alum and now as our head coach," Driscoll said. We look forward to achieving success under the direction of Coach Army, as he follows his vision and upholds the mission of the College."

As the Friars continue to acclimate themselves to Army's fast-paced, aggressive style of hockey, eight members of the team in 2007-08 recorded career highs in scoring, led by Matt Taormina (27 points), who recorded the most points by a Friar defenseman since All-American Stephen Wood had 29 points during the 2003-04 season.

Prior to his arrival at Providence, Army spent three seasons with the Portland Pirates of the American Hockey League. While with the Pirates, he posted a 99-89-32-20 mark in 240 games behind the bench. Before his stint at Portland, he spent nine seasons as an assistant coach in the NHL for two different teams. He worked for four seasons as an assistant for Friar great Ron Wilson with the Anaheim Mighty Ducks (1993-97) and five years under Wilson with the Washington Capitals (1997-02).

In addition to his experience in the AHL and NHL, Army also has worked with USA Hockey. In 1994 and 1996, Army was an assistant coach for the U.S. National Team. The 1996 U.S. National Team captured the bronze medal at the World Championships in Vienna, Austria. Most recently, he served as an assistant with the U.S. World Cup Team in 2004. He also served as the head coach for the U.S. Under-18 Team at the 1995 and 1996 Pacific Cup.

Army is no stranger to the Friar hockey program. He began his coaching career as an assistant under Mike McShane. He also enjoyed a stellar playing career with Providence from 1981-85. He currently ranks first at Providence in games played (151), sixth in points (179), 11th in goals (71) and tied for fourth in assists (108). During the 1984-85 season, Army earned First-Team All-America accolades and was a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award.

Army and his wife, Sue, a former Providence track and cross country star, have two sons, Derek and Travis.
