Friars Compete In New England Indoor Track Championships

BOSTON, MASS. - The Providence College Men's and Women's Indoor Track teams competed at the New England Championships held at Boston University this past weekend. Friday, February 29th was the first day of competition, followed by day two on Saturday, March 1st.
On Friday, junior Katherine Schock (Norwood, Mass.) and junior Katie Elliot (Penfield, N.Y.) both quailed for a trip to the finals on Saturday. Schock ran 2:16.79 in the trials and finished eighth in the finals with a time of 2:16.31. Elliot ran 2:58.94 in the trials and finished sixth overall in the finals with a time of 2:56.99.
The women's distance medley relay team had an exceptional run, finishing second overall. The relay team had sophomore Breffini Twohig (Dublin, Ireland) (3:39.10), freshman Julie Wolf (Holden, Mass.) (60.91), freshman Emma Perron (West Hartford, Conn.) (2:16.23), and sophomore Krystal Douglas (Harpswell, Maine) (4:50.35). Senior Michelle Childs (Cameron, Ontario) had a great run in the 3000m, finishing fourth overall with a time of 9:45.02. The Friar women dominated the mile run, as Douglas finished first overall with a time of 4:53.96 and Twohig finished fifth overall with a time of 4:57.43.
On the men's side, senior James Lourenco (West Warwick, R.I.) and senior Chris McDermott (West Haven, Conn.) each ran strong trials and qualified themselves for the finals in the 800m and 1000m, respectively. Lourenco won his heat, running in a time of 1:53.94 and went on to run 1:50.88 in the finals to finish third overall. McDermott also won his trial heat in the 1000m with a time of 2:29.54 and went on to lead the finals until the last 100m, finishing in second with a time of 2:25.16.
Senior Ahmed Haji (West Hartford, Conn.) won the 3000m with a time of 8:17.19 and sophomore Tom Webb (Barrington, R.I.) placed second with a time of 8:22.91. The Friars concluded the meet with a win in the 4x800m relay with a time of 7:38.06. The team consisted of junior Nick Berluti (Westwood, Mass.) (1:55.83), senior Chris McDermott (West Haven, Conn.) (1:54.94), junior Charles Dewey (Worcester, Mass.) (1:52.30), and Lourenco (1:54.99).

In other competition, junior Danette Doetzel (Macklin, Sask.) represented Canada at the NACA Championships in Orlando, Fla., finishing the 6k course in 20:07 for an eighth place overall finish. Also at the meet was alumnus Dyland Wykes, who finished third in the senior men's 8k race with a time of 22:57.
Next up for the Providence College Men's Indoor track team is the IC4A Championships at Boston University in Boston, Mass. on Saturday, March 8th and Sunday, March 9th. The meet is scheduled to start at 11:00 a.m. The Women's Indoor Track team will also be in Boston, as they compete in the ECAC Championships at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston, Mass. The ECAC Championships are also scheduled to start at 11:00 a.m.
