BOSTON, MASS. - The Providence College Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field team competed at the Valentine Invitational at Boston University on February 8th and 9th. The women competed on Friday, while the men competed on Saturday. Both squads ended with impressive results.
The women were led by junior Danette Doetzel (Macklin, Sask.) who won the 5000m in a time of 16:29.00. The first place finish time was good enough to qualify Doetzel for the NCAA Championships. Sophomore Krystal Douglas (Harpswell, Maine) also ran a NCAA Provisional run in the 3000m, placing third with a time of 9:29.15. Sophomore Breffini Twohig (Dublin, Ireland) placed eighth in the 300m with a time of 9:45.43, qualifying her for the ECAC Championships. Freshman Emma Perron (West Hartford, Conn.) had an excellent run in the 3000m, finishin in thirde place with a time of 9:29.15. Perron's finish qualified her for the ECAC Championships as well.
Also competing in the women's meet on Friday night, was Providence College alum Kim Smith. Smith won the mile run in an impressive time of 4:24.14, which is a new New Zealand National Record. Smith's time is the 20th fastest time ever run indoors.
Senior Max Smith (Dunedin, New Zealand) led the way for the men, placing first in the 3000m with a NCAA Provisional time of 7:57.19. Senior Ahmed Haji (West Hartford, Conn.) and junior Richard Yates (Dublin, Ireland) also ran well in the 3000m placing sixth (8:12.35) and ninth (8:14.07), respectively. Sophomore Hayden McLaren (Christ Church, New Zealand) continued to impress, posting a first place finish and a Boston University Facility record in the 1000m, with a time of 2:21.50. The previous record time was 2:21.54. Senior Chris McDermott (West Haven, Conn.) finished second , behind McLaren, in a time of 2:25.77.
Freshman Lewin Richards qualified for the BIG EAST Championships in the 200m with a time of 22.67. Fellow freshman Brian Stannard (East Longmeadow, Mass.) also qualified for the BIG EAST Championships running the 400m in a time of 49.80. Senior James Lourenco (West Warwick, R.I.) set a new school record in the 500m, placing second with a time of 1:03.43.
In the men's 4x400m relay, a team of Stannard (50.15), Lourenco (48.65), Isaiah Davis (Hyde Park, Mass.) (51.50), and Alan Pandiani (Shrewsbury, Mass.) (50.48) finished 18th overall with a time of 3:21.05.
Next up for the Friars is the BIG EAST Championships on February 23rd and 24th at the Armory.
