Hamden, Conn. - The Providence College volleyball team began play at the Bobcat Invitational in Hamden Conn. on the campus of Quinnipiac University on Friday, September 7. The Friars were defeated 3-1 by Maryland- Baltimore County by the scores of 32-34, 30-18, 30-22, and 30-24. Junior Jeanette Toney (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and senior Sarah Fleming (Saint Paul, Minn.) led the Friars with 15 kills apiece. With the loss, the Friars drop to 3-3 while UMBC improves to 5-1 with the win.
The Friars got off to a good start winning game one in dramatic fashion 34-32, with back-to-back kills from Toney to seal the victory. However, UMBC battled back by finishing game two on a 10-3 run. The retrievers carried the momentum into game three with a 30-22 win. UMBC closed out the match with a 10-4 run after the Friars had tied the score at 20-20. "The team played with great intensity and they really swung well tonight, which is a good sign for the future," said Head Coach Margot Royer.
Junior Elizabeth Flynn (Bellerose, N.Y.) was the third Friar to hit double-figure kills with 13. Fleming added two assists and 13 digs to go along with her 15 kills. Junior setter Sara Sheehan (West Chester, Pa.) had another solid performance with 45 assists. Junior Kelly Krahenbuhl (Larkspur, Colo.) contributed on the defensive side of the ball with a game-high 16 digs.
Providence will continue action in the Bobcat Invitational on Saturday, September 8 with matches against Rider and the host school, Quinnipiac.
