PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- On Saturday, January 6, Providence College will celebrate a very special night in Friar basketball history when it honors the two greatest coaches in the history of the program at the Friars versus Seton Hall game. The College will hold two dedications to honor Joe Mullaney and Dave Gavitt. Prior to start of the game, the floor at the Dunkin' Donuts Center will be named in honor of Coach Gavitt, a tribute supported by a resolution passed by the Rhode Island General Assembly. At halftime, the College will honor both great coaches when it unveils a banner for each coach in the rafters of the Dunkin' Donuts Center.

To help the College honor Gavitt and Mullaney and recognize the tradition that they established, all former Friar men's basketball player have been invited to attend the game and participate in the ceremonies.

Mullaney, the all-time winningest coach at Providence College, posted a 319-164 record in two stints that covered 18 seasons as the head coach of the Friars. As head coach from 1955-69, he coached six All-Americans, earning a 271-94 record (.742). He left Providence College in 1969 and became the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers. He returned to Providence College in 1981 and coached the Friars until 1985 (four seasons). The former Friar head coach passed away on March 8, 2000.

Gavitt, who was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Haff of Fame in 2006, served as Mullaney's assistant coach prior to guiding the Friars for 10 seasons (1969-79) and posting a 209-84 mark. A five-time New England Coach of the Year, he led PC to eight consecutive 20-win seasons, five NCAA tournament appearances (including the Final Four in 1973), three NIT appearances and wins over 23 teams ranked in the top-20. He served as PC's Director of Athletics from 1971-82. He left PC in 1982 to work full-time as the commissioner of the BIG EAST Conference.
