PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Providence College Head Coach Tim Welsh today announced the promotions of Vince Cautero as assistant men's basketball coach, Steve Demeo as associate head coach and Kevin Kurbec as director of basketball operations. Cautero, who had been the Friars' director of basketball operations for the last seven years, replaces Bob Walsh who was hired as the head coach of the men's basketball team at Rhode Island College. DeMeo, a longtime assistant coach at Providence, will now serve as the associate head coach. Kurbec, a 2002 graduate of Providence, has worked with the Friar men's basketball team for the last seven years as an undergraduate student manager and as the graduate assistant.

Cautero is entering his eighth season at Providence College. In addition to his seven seasons as the director of basketball operations for the Friars, he has developed an extensive resume working in college basketball. Prior to coming to Providence, he spent six years as an assistant coach at Florida International University. Cautero served as the recruiting coordinator at FIU and helped the team post two 20-win seasons, capture two Trans America Athletic Conference titles and make the school's first appearance in the NCAA Tournament (1995). He also recruited FIU stars Raja Bell and Carlos Arroyo, who are currently playing in the NBA for the Phoenix Suns and the Detriot Pistons, respectively. Upon graduating from Florida State in 1988, Cautero began his coaching career as an assistant to Pat Kennedy for the Seminoles. He served as an assistant at Florida State until 1992, helping the Seminoles make five post-season appearances, including four trips to the NCAA Tournament. At FSU, Cautero coached Seminole greats Sam Cassell, Charlie Ward, Doug Edwards, George McCloud and Bob Sura.

DeMeo has spent the last 10 seasons working under Friar Head Coach Tim Welsh. DeMeo came to Providence in 1998 with Welsh and had worked the previous three seasons as his assistant at Iona. He also has coached at Queensborough Community College (1988-89), LIU-CW Post (1989-90), Bronx Community College (1990-93) and Monroe Junior College (1993-95). As the head coach at Monroe, he led the Mustangs to a 53-8 record over two seasons. DeMeo has been instrumental in recruiting the Friars' top players in recent years, including 2004 Los Angeles Lakers Laker draft pick Marcus Douthit and nine-time All-American Ryan Gomes. Gomes, who was recently drafted by the Boston Celtics, led the BIG EAST in scoring in 2005 and established PC's all-time scoring mark.

Kurbec also is entering his eighth season working with the Friar basketball team. During his four years as an undergraduate, Kurbec served as a manager for the team. He has worked the last three years as a graduate assistant. As the graduate assistant, he oversaw the student managers, coordinated the team's meals at home and was responsible for the organization of the game scouting. Kurbec also served as the film exchange coordinator for the Friars. As the director of basketball operations, he will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the office. He also will monitor the team's academic progress and serve as the liaison with the office of academic services.

"I am pleased that I am able to promote Vince, Steve and Kevin to fill these three positions with our program," Welsh said. "Vince, Steve and Kevin are three very loyal and dedicated members of our staff. Vince will now be able to help in all areas of coaching. He has a tremendous amount of experience working in college basketball that should help move our program forward. Steve has done an excellent job recruiting and helping our players develop over the years. Kevin has been an integral part of our efforts over the years. He has developed strong ties with the campus, the community and our student-athletes."
