PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College volleyball team (1-12) earned its first victory of the season with a 3-2 win over Sacred Heart Saturday night in the second day at the Friar Invitational. High Point University (N.C.) won the tournament, which was held on the campus of Providence College at Alumni Hall inside Mullaney Gymnasium. In the tournament finale, PC lost to Hartford, 3-1.

In Saturday's first match, Gardner-Webb defeated High Point for second time this year. High Point won the first meeting, 3-2, back on Aug. 30. This time, High Point swept the Panthers, 32-30, 30-26 and 30-25. Sophomore Jamie Kaufman (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) led the Panthers as with 14 kills and 16 digs. Additionally, teammate Michelle Feiser (Hagerstown, Md.) totaled 10 kills and 15 assists.

High Point defeated Hartford 3-0 in the second match of the day. With the win, the Panthers improved to 4-0 in the tournament. Feiser totaled a match-high 21 assists along with 11 kills to lead the Panthers, while Kaufman added 13 kills and 11 digs. The Panthers posted a .224 attack percentage.

Match three pitted Gardner-Webb against Sacred Heart. The Bulldogs took a commanding 2-0 lead, but the Pioneers fired back into the contest as SHU won games three and four to tie the score. Gardner-Webb then won the fifth game, 15-4. Four players on each team registered double-digit kill performances including a pair of Sacred Heart players who totaled over 20 kills apiece. Pioneers sophomore Christine Duffy (Massapequa, N.Y.) tallied 20 kills along with 21 digs while senior teammate Heather Brooks (Regina, Saskatchewan) totaled 20 kills. For Gardner-Webb, five different players registered double-digit dig totals, including freshman Katie Matykowski (Sun Prarie, Wisc.), who had a match-high 24.

In the fourth match of the afternoon, the host Friars took on Sacred Heart. The Friars jumped out to an early 11-7 lead, but Sacred Heart responded with a 9-5 spurt to knot the match at 16-16. As the teams continued to battle to a 20-20 tie, PC went on a run to surge ahead, 24-21 forcing the Pioneers into a timeout. It was not enough to stop the momentum as the Friars closed out the first game on a 6-1 run and won the game, 30-22. Baker totaled 10 kills in the first game alone, while Fiorvanti had 12 assists. As a team, PC posted an hitting percentage of .288 in the first game.

Things were drastically different in the second game as the teams were tied early on, 5-5. SHU went on a 7-2 run and opened up a 15-7 advantage. The SHU lead grew to as many as 11 points, 20-9, but PC would make a late push to cut it to six, 26-20 and 28-22. But Sacred Heart held on for the 30-23 victory. The Pioneers also won game three, 30-19, but PC came back with a 30-28 victory to force a game five.

PC held a 9-3 lead in the fifth game, and held on for a 15-9 victory. Five different Sacred Heart players turned in double-digit dig performances including freshman libero Katie Thomas (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.), who totaled 23 digs and senior Michelle Clarke (Baltimore, Md.), who had 45 assists and 26 digs. For the Friars, Little turned in one of the top performances of her young collegiate career, notching a match-high 49 digs. Classmate Nonie Ferguson (Davie, Fla.) also had a break out match, totaling 15 kills while maintaining a .217 hitting percentage. Freshman Elizabeth Flynn (Bellerose, N.Y.) was solid with nine kills and a team-best .226 hitting percentage. Senior Allison Baker (Glastonbury, Conn.) had a season-high 24 kills along with 14 digs, while senior Annie Fiorvanti (Northport, N.Y.) had 32 assists and 13 digs.

Providence volleyball (1-12) returns to action on Friday, Sept. 23rd as the Friars travel to Poughkeepsie, N.Y. for the Marist Tournament. The Friars will take on Fairleigh Dickinson beginning at 12:00 p.m.
