PROVIDENCE, R.I. - It was announced on Monday, March 7 that Providence College senior forward Ryan Gomes (Waterbury, Conn.) was selected to the All-BIG EAST First Team. Gomes, who was named to the First Team last season, is the first Friar to earn two All-BIG EAST First Team honors. Gomes was also named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team in 2003.
He joins former Friar Otis Thorpe '84 as the only other PC player to earn All-BIG EAST accolades for three consecutive seasons. Additionally, he is just the seventh Friar ever to receive First Team All-BIG EAST honors. The other six former Friars named were Otis Thorpe (1984), Billy Donovan (1987), Eric Murdock (1991), Eric Williams (1995), Austin Croshere (1997) and Jamel Thomas (1999).
Gomes, a nine-time All-America selection and 2004-05 BIG EAST Conference Preseason Player of the Year, led the BIG EAST in scoring with 21.7 points per game this year. He also posted the highest figure in conference play with 23.2 points per contest. Those totals made him just the second Friar ever to accomplish the feat and first since Eric Murdock who led the league with a 27.2 points per game average in 1991.
Additionally, Gomes finished third in the league in rebounds with 8.2 per contest, and has posted 40 double-doubles during his career, including six this season. Gomes also has totaled 2,118 career points placing him first in school history. He also has 1,020 career rebounds, which ranks fifth all-time at PC. He became the first Friar ever to surpass 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds.
On Sunday, March 6th, Gomes was named BIG EAST Player of the Week. In a 2-0 week, he averaged 24.5 points per game and 6.5 rebounds, including a game-winning three-point play with 1.8 seconds left to give PC a 68-65 win at Georgetown on March 5th. It marks the third time this season Gomes has earned the honor as he also was named BIG EAST Player of the Week on Dec. 27 and Feb. 14. It also marks the eighth time during his career he has won the award, tops among current BIG EAST players and the most ever by a men's basketball player from Providence. Former Friar Jamel Thomas had won the honor six times during his career.
The Friars' men's basketball team (14-16, 4-12 BIG EAST) returns to action against West Virginia in the first round of the BIG EAST Conference Tournament on March 9th. Televised live on ESPN, the contest is slated to tip-off at 2:00 p.m.
