PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Providence College junior forward Ryan Gomes (Waterbury, Conn.) was named to the ESPN.com First Team All-America squad on Friday, March 5. He joins St. Joesph's Jameer Nelson, Connecticut's Emeka Okafor, Oregon's Luke Jackson and NC State's Julius Hodge as the other members of the First Team. Gomes is the first Friar to earn first team All-America honors since Eric Murdock was named to the Wooden First Team and the Scripps Howard First Team in 1991.
Gomes has had an impressive season for the Friars. He is fourth in the BIG EAST in scoring (19.2 ppg), second in rebounding (9.6 rpg) and second in free-throw percentage (.880). Gomes has been instrumental in helping the Friars post a 20-6 mark and an 11-4 record in BIG EAST play. The Friars currently are in third place in league standings and have clinched a first round bye in the 2004 BIG EAST Tournament. Providence is ranked 12th in the Associated Press Poll and 13th in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll. The Friars have been ranked for seven weeks this season, which is the most the squad has been ranked since the 1977-78 team was ranked for 13 weeks.
Gomes has led the Friars to a 3-2 mark versus ranked teams this season, including the Friars' first road win over a top-10 opponent since January 20, 1990 as PC upset fourth-ranked Connecticut, 66-56, on Saturday, January 24 at Hartford, Conn.
In 26 games this season, Gomes has registered 12 double-doubles. He also has scored 20 or more points 13 times, including a season-high 28 points versus Texas on January 5 and Seton Hall on February 1. He also has registered 10 or more rebounds in 14 of the team's 26 contests.
Gomes, who played for three seasons at Wilby High School (Conn.), is the son of Teresa Gomes and John Brooks.
