PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Providence College senior netminder Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Sask.) was named Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, February 17.
It marked the second time in three weeks and the third time this season that Schaefer has earned Defensive Player of the Week honors. Last week, Schaefer was named Hockey East Player of the Week for the first time in his career at Providence.
Schaefer, a Second-Team All-American in 2001, led the Friars to a 5-1 victory over second-ranked Maine on Friday, February 14. He stopped 33 of 34 shots to lead the Friars to their first win at Alfond Arena since March 24, 1989. On Saturday, February 15, Schaefer made 22 saves as the Friars skated to a 2-2 overtime tie at Maine.
In his last seven games (six starts), Schaefer has a 5-0-1 record, a 1.52 goals against average and a .954 save percentage. For the season, he is 11-6-1 with a 2.72 goals against average and a .916 save percentage.
The Friars return to action this weekend as they will play Boston University in a crucial home-and-home series, beginning on Friday, February 21 at Schneider Arena. The Terriers are currently in fourth place in Hockey East with 24 points, while the Friars are in fifth with 22 points.
