PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Providence College freshman forward Chase Watson (Media, Pa.) was named Hockey East Rookie of the Week and sophomore goaltender Bobby Goepfert (Kings Park, N.Y.) earned Defensive Player of the Week honors on Monday, October 20.

Watson earned the honor for the second consecutive week as he recorded four points in a two-game sweep of Minnesota State on October 17-18. Watson assisted on the game-winning goal as the Friars held on to defeat the Mavericks, 2-1, on October 17. The following night, the 6-foot, 195-pound center scored the final two goals of the game to secure PC's 5-3 victory. He also had one assist and was named first star of the game.

Goepfert also was impressive in PC's wins over the weekend. He stopped 34 of 35 shots, including 16 in the first period, to earn first star of the game honors on Friday. In addition, he made 21 saves on Saturday night as the Friars posted a 5-3 victory.

Watson and Goepfert played junior hockey together for the Cedar Rapids Roughriders of the USHL. Watson led the team in scoring last season with 52 points, while Goepfert was named USHL Player of the Year in 2001-02. Currently, Watson is tied for the Friar lead in scoring with seven points (four goals, three assists), while Goepfert has a 4-0 record, with a 2.00 goals against average and a .927 save percentage.
