PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's hockey team announced its annual team awards on Friday, April 12th at the Biltmore Hotel in Providence, R.I. at the team's 2001-02 Awards Banquet.
Junior right wing Jon DiSalvatore (South Windsor, Conn.) received the Lamoriello Award, which is given to the team's most valuable player. DiSalvatore led the Friars in scoring with career-bests of 16 goals scored and 26 assists for 42 points in 38 games. The junior co-captain tied for the team-lead with six power-play goals and registered two short-handed tallies. DiSalvatore also earned the HOCKEY EAST's Len Ceglarski Sportsmanship Award.
Junior goaltender Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Sask.) received the Ronald Wilson Award as the team's top defensive player. Schaefer anchored the Friar defense in goal, playing in 35 games and logging 2,062 of a possible 2,311 minutes. He recorded a 3.29 goals against average, a .905 save percentage and an 11-18-5 overall record on the season. Schaefer concluded his junior season ranked seventh on the Friars career saves list with 2,140 stops.
Junior left wing Mike Lucci (Parma, Ohio) received the Thomas Eccleston, Jr. Award as the squad's unsung hero and he received the Friar Award, which is given by the Providence coaches to the player who they feel has done the little things that do not appear in the statistics. In 38 games, Lucci scored five goals and added 11 assists for 16 points. He was eighth on the team in scoring and added a power-play and short-handed goal.
Freshman defenseman Jeff Mason (Easthampton, Mass.) earned the team's Plus/Minus Award. He also received the Reverend Herman Schneider Award, which is given to the most valuable freshman. Mason played in 34 of 38 games this season, totalling one goal and nine assists for 10 points, and he led the squad with a plus/minus rating of +13.
Senior center Peter Fregoe (Massena, N.Y.) received the team's Academic Award. Fregoe was second on the Friars in scoring with 15 goals and 23 assists for 38 points in 38 games. Fregoe, a management major, recorded the squad's highest grade point average to earn the award.
