FRIARS OFF TO 7-0 START FOR FIRST TIME IN SCHOOL HISTORY... The 11th-ranked Providence College men's hockey team posted a 2-0 record last week. On Friday, November 1, PC defeated UMass, 2-1, in overtime. Junior Cody Loughlean (Innisfail, Alta.) scored the game winner just 44 seconds into the overtime period. The win marked the first time in school history that the Friars recorded two consecutive Hockey East overtime victories. Senior Devin Rask (Parkside, Sask.) also scored for the Friars, while senior goaltender Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Sask.) stopped 27 of 28 shots. On Sunday, November 3, the Friars defeated Princeton, 8-1. With the win, the Friars improved to 7-0, marking the first time in school history that the team has started the season with seven consecutive victories. Rask led the Friars with four goals, all of which came in the third period. For Rask, it was his first career four-goal game and it marked the first time a Friar recorded four goals in a game since senior Jon DiSalavatore (S. Windsor, Conn.) tallied four goals on November 10, 2001 at Northeastern. Freshman Bobby Goepfert (Kings Park, N.Y.) made 22 saves in the win. Peter Zingoni (Newtown, Conn.) scored two goals, while DiSalvatore and freshman Torry Gajda (Westfield, Mass.) each scored one goal. Gajda's goal was his fourth of the season and his second short-handed goal, which ties him for first in the nation.
FRIAR SCORING PUNCH... PC's first line of Peter Fregoe (Massena, N.Y.), Jon DiSalvatore (S. Windsor, Conn.) and Devin Rask (Parkside, Sask.) recorded a combined 12 points in the 8-1 win over Princeton on Sunday, November 3. It marked the second time this season that the first line tallied at least 12 points in one game. The trio also recorded 13 points in a 6-5 overtime win over UMass Lowell on October 25. DiSalvatore leads the team in scoring with 20 points (six goals, 14 assists). Fregoe is second on the team with 19 points (eight goals, 11 assists), while Rask is third with 13 points (seven goals, six assists). In addition, DiSalvatore is tied for first in the nation in scoring with twenty points, while Fregoe is second with 19 points. Junior Peter Zingoni (Newtown, Conn.) has eight goals this season, which is a career high. Zingoni scored two goals in the 8-1 win over Princeton on November 3. PC has outscored its opponents, 42-13.
SOLID FRIAR GOALTENDING... The Friars have enjoyed strong defensive play this season, led by senior goaltender Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Sask.) and freshman Bobby Goepfert (Kings Park, N.Y.). Schaefer has made 126 saves in four starts this season. In addition, Schaefer has a .945 save percentage and a 2.20 goals against average. In his most recent start, Schaefer stopped 27 of 28 shots to lead the Friars to a 2-1 overtime victory over UMass on November 1. Goepfert has played in three games and has a .949 save percentage and a 1.33 goals against average. Goepfert made 20 saves and earned the shutout in his collegiate debut as the Friars defeated Iona, 11-0 on October 12. In his most recent start, he made 22 saves as PC defeated Princeton, 8-1, on November 3. The duo has a combined save percentage of .939 and a 1.84 goals against average.
CONSECUTIVE OVERTIME WINS... The last time the Friars won back-to-back overtime games was during the 1992-93 season when they captured the RPI Tournament. PC defeated Clarkson (4-3 on December 29, 1992) and RPI (5-4 on December 30, 1992). On October 25, 2002, the Friars defeated UMass Lowell, 6-5, in overtime. In their next game on November 1, 2002, the Friars defeated UMass, 2-1, in overtime. The win against UMass on November 1 also marked the first time ever the Friars posted two consecutive Hockey East overtime wins.
NEXT WEEK... The Friars are back in action on Friday, November 8 versus Northeastern at Boston, Mass. The two teams also will play each other on Saturday, November 9 at Schneider Arena. The Friars are 69-37-7 all-time versus Northeastern. Last season, PC posted a 1-2 record against the Huskies. At Providence, the Friars are 33-16-3 all-time versus the Huskies. PC also holds a 33-20-4 advantage at Northeastern. In their last meeting, the Huskies defeated the Friars, 3-2, on February 1, 2002 at Matthews Arena in Boston, Mass.
