Providence College Indoor Track Teams Compete

The Providence College women's indoor track team competed at both the University of Rhode Island (January 11) and Yale University (January 12) over the weekend. Senior Kathryn Casserly (Galway, Ireland) qualified for the BIG EAST Championship in two individual events (800m, Mile). Freshman Deirdre Byrne (Avoca, Ireland) (800m), junior Roisin McGettigan (Wicklow, Ireland) (1000m) and sophomore Lisa Cappello (Lockport, N.Y.) (Mile) qualified for the BIG EAST Championship in one event each. Junior Emer O'Shea (Limerick, Ireland) (500m), sophomore Emily Tallen (Kingston, Ontario) (3000m), and freshman Erin Pearce (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) (HJ) qualified for the New England Championships in their respective events.

At URI, Casserly took third in the 800-meter run (2:17.82), and second place in the mile at Yale (5:05.90) to qualify for BIG EASTs. Casserly also qualified for the BIG EAST Championship in the Distance Medley Relay, along with Cappello, senior Kate Gall (Cumberland, Md.), and O'Shea, with a first-place finish (12:14.06) at URI.

Byrne finished first in the 800-meter run (2:15.33) at URI, and was a member of the Distance Medley Relay team that took first place (11:55.85), and qualified for the BIG EAST Championships at Yale. O'Shea, Roisin Quinn and McGettigan are the other members of the qualifying team.

O'Shea finished second (1:19.10) in the 500-meter run to qualify for the New England Championships, while Gall placed third (1:20.16) at URI. Gall went on to take a fourth-place finish at Yale in the 800-meter run (2:23.84). McGettigan placed first in the 1000-meter run (2:53.89), and Cappello placed first in the mile-run at URI (5:06.16). In the 3000-meter run, Tallen qualified for New Englands, with a second-place finish (10:17.52), and senior Marissa Colburn (Wethersfield, Conn.) took third place (10:46.66). Rounding out the weekend of events, Pearce finished second in the high jump and qualified for New Englands, with a leap of 1.55 meters.

On the men's side, Providence competed at Yale University on Saturday, January 12. Freshmen Dylan Wykes (Kingston, Ontario) and Patrick Moulton (Pelham, N.H.) both qualified for the BIG EAST Championships in the 3000-meter run. Wykes finished first, with a time of 8:27.68, and Moulton took second, finishing in 8:35.52. Junior Tyler McCabe (Mystic, Conn.) finished third in the 3000m, in 8:44.93. Patrick Guidera finished sixth in the mile run, with a time of 4:24.10.
