PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- It was announced on December 5 that Providence College senior guard John Linehan (Chester, Pa.) was one of 30 senior men's college basketball players nominated for the inaugural Senior CLASS Award. The Senior CLASS Award will be presented annually to the outstanding senior male and female NCAA Division I basketball players on April 20, 2002 in Kansas City, Mo. The general concept of the award to honor college seniors was initiated by sportscaster Dick Enberg during the CBS telecast of the 2001 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship Game in April.

The Senior CLASS Award, which is an acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, has a selection criteria that will be based on a number of factors, the most important being that the recipient must have exhausted their four years of eligibility and have fulfilled their commitment to their respective university. In addition, the recipient must be working toward their degree, be in good academic standing and be of sound moral character.

Linehan, who earned a number of preseason honors this year, was named the "Best Defender" of all college point guards, according to the Sporting News' November 19th issue. Linehan, the 2001 BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year, also was named Preseason All-BIG EAST First Team and one of the Top-50 Preseason Candidates for the 2001-02 Wooden Award All-America Team.

Linehan, a two-time captain for the Friars, is averaging 10.3 points, 2.4 steals and 3.8 rebounds per game this season. On November 20, he recorded a career-high 26 points in a 93-84 win against Austin Peay. Last season, the 5-9 guard led the BIG EAST in steals with 53 in 16 conference games (3.31). He also led the league in steals in overall action, averaging 3.12 thefts per game (81 steals in 26 games). He was third on the team in scoring last season, averaging 10.7 points per game. In May of 2001, Linehan earned his bachelor's degree in health policy management. He is currently working toward his master's degree in business administration.
