PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Providence College senior hockey star Jason Ialongo (Cranston, Rhode Island) has been named a recipient of the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics Student Achievement Award. The N4A Achievement Award honors five to 10 student-athletes throughout the country every year. The student-athletes all have overcome great personal, academic and/or emotional odds to achieve academic success while participating in intercollegiate athletics.
Ialongo becomes the second PC student-athlete to earn the N4A Achievement Award. Last year, Friar swimmer Jane Thompson received the honor.
The award is the second honor Ialongo has received this week. On Monday, he was named a recipient of the College's prestigious Mal Brown Award given annually to the male athlete whose career of intercollegiate competition portrayed sportsmanship, courage and honor.
Ialongo has been one of PC's top defenseman the last two seasons. In 1997, Ialongo was diagnosed with cancer. He began his comeback as a sophomore and worked his way back into the lineup. In 1998-99, he recorded a career best 11 goals and 18 assists. Also during his junior season, Ialongo was the leader on PC's power-play unit which finished the season ranked No. 1 in the nation at 25.4 percent. As a senior, he led all Friar defenseman in scoring with 21 points (one goal, 20 assists). He finished his career at Providence with 65 points (19 goals, 46 assists) in 119 games.
Following his senior season, Ialongo played seven games with the Providence Bruins of the AHL and notched one goal and one assist.
Ialongo, who attended Bishop Hendricken High School, is the son of Michael Ialongo. He will graduate later in the month with a bachelor's degree in accounting.
