Claire Shearman Named PC Athlete Of The Week

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Sophomore track athlete Claire Shearman (Portsmouth, N.H.) was named Providence College Athlete of the Week on Monday, May 1.

Shearman earned the honor after finishing fifth in the 5,000 meters in the college championship division (16:23.31) at the prestigious Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa. on April 28. She was PC's top individual finisher at the Penn Relays. With her time of 16:23.31, Shearman qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track Championship on May 31-June 3 in Durham, N.C.

Shearman has been one of the Friars' top runners this year. In October, she finished 15th and earned All-BIG EAST honors at the BIG EAST Cross Country Championship. Shearman ran her best race of the season at the NCAA Northeast Regional Cross Country Championship when she placed third (17:20) and helped the Friars earn a first-place finish. At the NCAA Cross Country Championship, Shearman was PC's third finisher (66th overall) in a time of 17:57.30.

Shearman is a 1998 graduate of the Governor Dummer School in Byfield, Mass.

The Friars will return to action on May 6-7 at the BIG EAST Outdoor Track Championship at Rutgers University in Piscataway, N.J.
