PROVIDENCE COLLEGE (16-15-1, 8-12) HOCKEY NOTES:

FRIARS SPLIT WEEKEND SERIES AGAINST 2ND RANKED BU... On February 18-19, Providence posted a 1-1 record against second-ranked Boston University. On February 18, PC earned a 5-2 upset against the Terriers at Schneider Arena. Sophomore Drew Omicioli (W. Warwick, R.I.) led the PC offense with two goals and two assists. Senior Doug Sheppard (Georgetown, Ontario), junior Adam Lee (Brampton, Ontario) and freshman Jon DiSalvatore (So. Windsor, Conn.) also scored for the Friars. Junior goaltender Boyd Ballard (Weyburn, Saskatchewan) registered 32 stops in the win. The following night, the Terriers scored two goals in the final 10 minutes of the game to defeat the Friars, 4-3, at Walter Brown Arena. Sheppard, junior Heath Gordon (Pembroke, Mass.) and senior Josh MacNevin (W. Lethbridge, Alberta) all scored for PC. Ballard registered 34 stops in net.

OMICIOLI NOTCHES FOUR POINTS VS. BU... Sophomore Drew Omicioli (W. Warwick, R.I.) scored two goals and added two assists in the Friars' 5-2 win against second-ranked Boston University on February 18. It marked Omicioli's first collegiate four-point game and his eighth career multiple-point contest. Omicioli is fourth on the team in scoring with 22 points (10 goals, 12 assists) in 31 games. Last season, he was named the team's Most Valuable Freshman after leading all PC rookies in scoring with 17 points (eight goals, nine assists). Omicioli's older brother, Mike, who finished his career last season with the Friars, is currently playing for the Hampton Road Admirals of the ECHL.

SHEPPARD LEADS FRIAR OFFENSE ... Senior captain Doug Sheppard (Georgetown, Ontario) scored two goals and notched one assist in PC's two games against second-ranked Boston University on February 18-19. On February 18, he scored one goal and added one assist in PC's 5-2 win against BU. For Sheppard the two point effort was his 11th multiple-point game of the season and the 23rd of his career. On February 19, he scored his team leading 11th power-play goal in PC's 4-3 loss to the Terriers. Sheppard also leads the team in scoring (37 points) and goals (17). Sheppard now ranks 39th all-time in scoring at PC with 104 career points (49 goals, 55 assists). He was named HOCKEY EAST Player of the Month for November after recording 14 points (six goals, eight assists) in eight games. Sheppard earned HOCKEY EAST Player of the Week accolades after registering five points (three goals, two assists), including a hat trick, in PC's two wins against Northeastern on November 19-20.

BALLARD STRONG IN NET... Junior goaltender Boyd Ballard (Weyburn, Saskatchewan) made 66 stops while posting a 1-1 mark, a 3.00 goals against average and a .917 save percentage in two games against second-ranked Boston University on February 18-19. On February 18, Ballard made 32 saves in PC's 5-2 win against the Terriers. The following night, the junior netminder made 34 saves in PC's 4-3 loss to BU at Walter Brown Arena. For Ballard it was his third consecutive game with 32 or more saves. This season, he has recorded 30 or more stops in nine of his 20 starts. This season, he has posted a 10-10 mark, a 2.86 goals against average and a .908 save percentage. On December 10, he posted his third career shutout in the Friars' 2-0 win against Dartmouth at Schneider Arena. He made a season-high 40 saves in PC's 3-2 win over Cornell on November 23 at Schneider Arena. For his career at Providence, Ballard has posted a 36-34-2 record, a 3.37 goals against average and an .891 save percentage. He ranks seventh all-time at PC in saves (1,865) and sixth all-time in games played (75).

FRIARS PLAY RANKED TEAMS... Five out PC's last six games have been against ranked teams. PC is 4-2 in the last six games, including a 3-2 mark versus ranked squads. The Friars have four games remaining in the regular season and all are HOCKEY EAST contests. Of the team's four remaining games two are against seventh-ranked Maine (March 3-4). For the season, the Friars have posted a 7-7 record against ranked teams.

NEXT WEEK... Providence College will play a home-and-home series against UMass-Lowell next week. On Friday, February 25, PC will play UMass-Lowell at Tsongas Arena. The following night, the Friars will host UMass-Lowell at Schneider Arena. Both games will begin at 7:00 p.m.

THE PROVIDENCE/UMASS-LOWELL SERIES... Friday's game will be the 61st meeting between the two schools. Providence leads the all-time series 29-26-5. The two teams first met on January 27, 1982 with Providence defeating UMass-Lowell, 5-3, at Schneider Arena. PC's last win against the River Hawks was a 5-2 victory on February 5, 1999 at the Tsongas Arena. The Friars' last loss to UMass-Lowell was a 7-2 defeat at Schneider Arena on January 28, 2000.

AT TSONGAS ARENA... PC has registered a 2-0 mark against UMass-Lowell at Tsongas. In PC's only two games at Tsongas Arena, the Friars earned two 5-2 wins against the River Hawks on January 17, 1999 and February 5, 1999.

AT SCHNEIDER ARENA... PC has posted a 14-18 mark against the River Hawks at Schneider Arena. In the Friars' last game against UMass-Lowell at Schneider Arena, the River Hawks defeated the Friars, 7-2, on January 28, 2000. The Friars' last win against UMass-Lowell at Schneider Arena was a 5-3 victory on November 16, 1997.

THIS SEASON VS. UMASS-LOWELL... In the only meeting between the two teams this season, UMass-Lowell defeated the Friars, 7-2, at Schneider Arena on January 28. Josh MacNevin and Mike Farrell each scored for PC. Nolan Schaefer started in net for the Friars. Schaefer and Jamie Vanek combined to make 28 stops in the game.
