RASK POSTS STRONG WEEKEND... Sophomore Devin Rask (Parkside, Saskatchewan) registered four points (two goals, two assists) in PC's wins over Miami and Lake Superior on October 20-21. On October 20, the sophomore center assisted on the game-winning goal in the squad's 5-0 win over Miami. On October 21, Rask recorded his sixth career multiple point game, notching two goals and one assists versus Lake Superior. Rask scored both of his goals on the power play.
LIBBY BACKBONES DEFENSE... Senior Matt Libby (Saco, Maine) led the Friars' defensive unit as they allowed just one goal in two games versus Miami and 12th-ranked Lake Superior State on October 20-21. Libby's defensive play helped the Friars to their first shutout of the 2000-01 season as the squad defeated Miami, 5-0. Libby also contributed on the offensive side anchoring the Friar power play (6-19, .375%). Libby tallied two goals and one assist and posted a plus/minus rating of two, in PC's victories. The Friar captain is currently third on the team in scoring.
LOUGHLEAN NETS FIRST COLLEGIATE POINTS... Freshman Cody Loughlean (Innisfail, Alberta) was the Friars' top rookie in two wins over CCHA foes Miami and Lake Superior on October 20-21. The rookie centerman tallied one goal and one assist and is tied for the team lead with a plus/minus rating of two. Loughlean assisted on the Friars' first goal in the squad's 5-1 upset victory over 12th-ranked Lake Superior and tallied his first collegiate goal in the Friars win against Miami.
FRIARS POST 2-0 WEEKEND RECORD...PC earned its second victory of the season on October 29, versus 12th-ranked Lake Superior. Sophomore Devin Rask paced the Friars attack with two goals and one assist. Peter Fregoe (Massena, N.Y.), Regan Kelly (Imperial, Saskatchewan) and Drew Omicioli (West Warwick, R.I.) added two assists each. Jay Leach (Altamont, N.Y.), Jon DiSalvatore (S. Windsor, Conn.) and Matt Libby (Saco, Maine) each scored one goal in the Friars' victory. Sophomore Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Saskatchewan) record 26 saves for his first win of the season. On Friday, PC earned its first win of the season with a 5-0 victory against CCHA foe Miami at Schneider Arena. Sophomore Mike Lucci (Parma, Ohio) scored two goals for the Friars, while Drew Omicioli (West Warwick, R.I.), Matt Libby (Saco, Maine) and Cody Loughlean (Innisfail, Alberta) each added one goal for Providence. Boyd Ballard (Weyburn, Saskatchewan) recorded 30 saves for his fourth career shutout. The Friars' special teams played a significant role in the squad's win over Miami. The black and white were 11-11 in penalty kill situations, 2-7 on the power play and notched one short-handed goal. Included in the team's perfect 11 for 11 in man-down situations was two successful kills in five-on-three situations.
FRIARS SPECIAL TEAMS... The Friars' special teams made an immediate impact in the their opening weekend. PC was 16-17 in penalty kill situations, 6-16 on the power play (.375), and recorded one short-handed goal.
NEXT FOR THE FRIARS... The Friars will open their HOCKEY EAST season on Saturday, October 28 vs. Boston University at Schneider Arena at 7:00 p.m. On Sunday, October 29, PC will host ECAC foe Union at 7:00 p.m.
THE PROVIDENCE-BOSTON UNIVERSITY ALL-TIME SERIES... Saturday's game will be the 121st meeting between the two schools. BU leads the all-time series 75-38-7. The two teams first met on February 25, 1927 with Boston University defeating Providence, 12-0, at Rhode Island Auditorium. The loss to the Terriers was one of seven defeats the Friars suffered in their first season of collegiate competition (1-7-0). The Friars' last win against the Terriers was a 5-2 victory on February 18, 2000 at Schneider Arena. PC's last lost to BU was a 4-3 defeat at Walter Brown Arena on February 19, 2000.
BU VS. PC AT SCHNEIDER ARENA... The Friars have posted a 19-19-3 record against BU at Schneider Arena. In PC's last game against BU at Schneider Arena, the Friars defeated the Terriers 5-2 on February 18, 2000. The Friars last loss to the Terriers at Schneider Arena was an 8-2 defeat on March 13, 1999 in the second game of the Hockey East Quarterfinals.
LAST SEASON AGAINST THE TERRIERS... The Friars registered a 1-2 mark last season against the Terriers. In the first meeting between the Friars and the Terriers last season, BU defeated PC, 3-2, at Walter Brown Arena on October 30, 1999. Mike Farrell and Doug Sheppard each scored for the Friars. Boyd Ballard recorded 24 saves in the loss. On February 18, 2000, the Friars defeated BU, 5-2, at Schneider Arena. Drew Omicioli led the PC offense with two goals and two assists. Sheppard, Adam Lee and Jon DiSalvatore also scored for the Friars. Ballard registered 32 stops in the win. In the two team's final meeting of the season, BU defeated Providence, 4-3, at Walter Brown Arena on February 19, 2000. Doug Sheppard, Heath Gordon and Josh MacNevin all scored for the Friars while Ballard recorded 34 saves in the loss.
THE PROVIDENCE-UNION SERIES... Providence holds a 4-1 mark all-time against Union College. In their last meeting, the Friars defeated the Skating Dutchmen, 3-1 on December 29, 1999 at the first game of the RPI Holiday Tournament. In the first game ever between the two teams, PC defeated Union, 7-5, on October 28, 1994 at Schneider Arena. The Friars' only loss to Union was a 2-0 shutout on November 1, 1996 at Achilles Arena.
UNION VS. PC AT SCHNEIDER ARENA... The Friars are 2-0 all-time against Union at Schneider Arena. In the first meeting between the Friars and the Skating Ducthmen at Schneider Arena, PC defeated Union, 7-5, on October 28, 1994. In their last meeting at Schneider the Friars prevailed 5-4 in overtime on October 25, 1997.
