MIAMI UNIVERSITY (1-0-1) - Miami University travels to Providence College for the fifth meeting in the all-time history of both schools with the series tied at 2-2. The Red Hawks enter Friday's game with a 1-0-1 mark having opened the 2000 season with two games versus Clarkson University. In the season opener on October 13, Miami defeated Clarkson by a score of 4-1. The following night, the two teams battled to a 4-4 tie. Miami is led in scoring by junior defenseman Ken Marsch (Lake, Forest, Ill.) who tallied five assists in the season's first two games. Sophomore David Burleigh (North Vancouver, B.C.) and freshman David Bowen (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) are two solid goalkeepers who have split action in net this season. Together, Burleigh and Bowen have combined to post a 3.84 goals against average and a .862 save percentage.
PROVIDENCE COLLEGE (0-0-0) - The Providence College Friars open the 50th season of Friar hockey when they host the Miami University Red Hawks on Friday, October 20 at PC's Schneider Arena. Throughout the history of Providence hockey, the Friars have posted a 30-18-1 record in season openers. PC's last loss in a season opener was a 5-3 defeat to Miami at Schneider Arena on October 23, 1998. The Friars opened the 1999 campaign with a 2-1 win over Notre Dame at the Ice Breaker Tournament on October 15. Last season, the Red Hawks and the Friars split two games at Goggin Arena, with the Friars winning, 5-3, on October 22, 1999 and Miami earning a 5-2 win on October 23, 1999. The Friars expect to be led by junior forwards Peter Fregoe (Massena, N.Y.) and Drew Omicioli (West Warwick, R.I.) who combined to record 52 points for the black and white last year. Senior Boyd Ballard (Weyburn, Saskatchewan) returns to backstop Providence in his final collegiate season. For his career, Ballard has played in 82 games and posted a 38-37-3 record. Ballard recorded his best season in 1999-00 with 755 saves, a 3.02 goals against average and a .909 save percentage.
