CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- For 45 minutes Providence College and Boston College were involved in a close hockey game until the Eagles erupted for five third period goals to earn a 6-0 win over the Friars in HOCKEY EAST action at BC's Kelley Rink on Sunday, January 23.
In a scoreless first period, PC freshman goaltender Nolan Schaefer kept the Friars in the game by stopping all 18 Boston College shots.
The Eagles netted the first goal of the game at 11:12 of the second period when Jeff Giuliano caught the Friars in a line change and broke in all alone on Schaefer, beating him with a wrist shot to the glove side.
Boston College increased its lead to 2-0 when Ales Dolinar stole a clearing pass in the Providence end and passed to Krys Kolanos who snapped a high shot over Schaefer's glove at 5:50 of the third period. Dolinar's goal woke up the BC offense which erupted for four more goals over the next 4:02. Jeff Farkas scored at 7:32 to give BC a 3-0 lead and Kolanos added his second of the period at 9:04. Mark McLennan added the Eagles' fifth goal at 10:28 before Brian Gionta finished off BC's scoring at 11:34. Schaefer was replaced in the Friar net by Boyd Ballard with 8:26 remaining in the game.
BC goaltender Tim Kelleher made 29 stops while earning the shutout. Schaefer and Ballard finished with 35 stops.
With the win, Boston College improved to 14-7-1 overall and 7-6-1 in HOCKEY EAST action, while Providence falls to 12-11-1 overall and 4-8 in league play.
The Friars will return to action against UMass-Amherst on Wednesday, January 26 at PC's Schneider Arena at 7:00 p.m.
