NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. -- The Providence College Friars defeated the Merrimack College Warriors, 6-4, in HOCKEY EAST action on Saturday, Feb. 28 at North Andover, Mass.
Merrimack tallied the first goal of the game when Martin Laroche fired the puck into an open net at 6:51after PC goaltender Boyd Ballard had fallen while trying to play the puck behind the net. The Warriors extended their lead to 2-0 on a goal by John Pyliotis at 11:31. The Friars tallied their first goal of the game when Jon Coe slipped a low shot under Merrimack netminder Tom Welby at 12:38 of the first period. Martin Laroche quickly got the two goal lead back for the Warriors as he broke in and beat Ballard with a shot to the stick side at the 14:22 mark of the first period. PC got within one goal after Fernando Pisani converted with a high snapshot at 16:14 of the first.
Mike Omicioli evened the game at 3-3 with a shot from the right face-off circle at 2:40 of the second period. Casey Kesselring finished off a two-on-one break in on the power play at 5:01 of the second period to give Merrimack a 4-3 lead. Eighty two seconds later the Friars tied the game at 4-4 as Doug Sheppard poked in a rebound on the power play at 6:33 of the second period. PC earned its first lead of the game when Troy Lake scored on a wrap around at the 8:35 mark of the second period. Mike Mader increased the Friars lead to 6-4 with the final goal of the second period at 10:59.
Ballard registered 25 stops and earned his 12th win of the season for the Friars. Welby recorded 27 saves for the Warriors.
With the win Providence raised its record to 15-15-3 overall and 9-12-2 in HOCKEY EAST play while Merrimack fell to 9-23-1 overall and 4-19 in league play.
Providence College will conclude its regular-season schedule on Friday, March 6 against New Hampshire at PC's Schneider Arena at 7:00 p.m.
