PROVIDENCE, R.I. - PROVIDENCE COLLEGE HOCKEY NOTES:
FRIARS SPLIT WITH NEW HAMPSHIRE... The Providence College Friars posted a 1-1 mark against the seventh-ranked New Hampshire Wildcats on Nov. 6-7. On Nov. 6, PC defeated UNH, 6-1, at Schneider Arena. The win ended the Friars' four-game losing streak against the Wildcats and gave the team its first victory against UNH since a 3-2 win at Schneider Arena on Feb. 15, 1997. Senior Mike Omicioli (W. Warwick, R.I.) tallied two goals to lead the offense. Senior Troy Lake (Edmonton, Alberta), junior Doug Sheppard (Georgetown, Ontario), junior Jerry Keefe (Billerica, Mass.) and freshman Marc Suderman (Regina, Saskatchewan) also scored for the Friars. Sophomore Boyd Ballard (Weyburn, Saskatchewan) made 30 stops in goal. The following night, UNH defeated the Friars, 3-1, in Durham, N.H. Junior Jason Ialongo (Cranston, R.I.) netted the lone goal for the Friars. Ballard recorded a season-high 33 stops in net.
WIN OVER A RANKED OPPONENT... PC's 6-1 win against the seventh-ranked UNH Wildcats on Nov. 6 gave the Friars their first win against a ranked opponent since PC defeated No. 10 Northeastern on Jan. 9, 1998.
MIKE OMICIOLI PACES OFFENSE... Senior left wing Mike Omicioli (W. Warwick, R.I.) tallied two third-period goals and earned the game's No. 1 star in the Friars' 6-1 win against the UNH Wildcats on Nov. 6 at Schneider Arena. The two-goal effort was Omicioli's 23rd multiple-point game of his career and his fourth this season. It also was his fifth career multiple-goal game. On Oct. 30-31, Omicioli recorded seven points (two goals, five assists) in the Friars' two wins against Boston University. He tallied two goals and one assist in PC's 5-4 win against BU on Oct. 30. The following night, he recorded four assists in the Friars' 6-4 victory at Walter Brown Arena. His four-assist effort against BU marked Omicioli's 12th game with three or more points. It also marked the seventh time in his career that he registered three or more assists in a game and the 10th time he posted more than two assists in a contest. This season, Omicioli is tied for the team lead in points (12), goals (four) and assists (eight).
MIKE OMICIOLI RECORDS 100TH CAREER POINT... On Nov. 6 in PC's 6-1 win against UNH, senior Mike Omicioli (W. Warwick, R.I.) became the 42nd player in the history of Friar hockey to record 100 or more career points. Omicioli tallied two goal in the third period to record his 100th collegiate point. In 103 career games, the West Warwick native has registered 34 goals and 66 assists.
BALLARD BETWEEN THE PIPES... Sophomore goaltender Boyd Ballard (Weyburn, Saskatchewan) recorded 63 saves in a two HOCKEY EAST games against the seventh-ranked New Hampshire Wildcats on Nov. 6-7. On Nov. 6, Ballard made 30 saves and earned the game's No. 2 star in the Friars' 6-1 win against UNH. The following night, he recorded a season-high 33 stops in a 3-1 loss against the Wildcats at the Whittemore Center. In the two games against UNH, Ballard recorded a 2.00 goals against average and a .940 save percentage. Last season, Ballard earned HOCKEY EAST All-Rookie Team honors. He became the first Friar named to the All-Rookie Team since Craig Darby earned the honor in 1992. In six games this season, Ballard has posted a 4-2 mark, a 2.90 goals against average, an .892 save percentage.
KEEFE CONTINUES TO SCORE... Junior center Jerry Keefe (Billerica, Mass.) continued his strong offensive play by notching two points (one goal, one assist) in the Friars' 6-1 win against New Hampshire on Nov. 6 at Schneider Arena. His two points on Nov. 6, marked the 11th multiple-point game of his career and his fourth this season. On Oct. 30-31, Keefe tallied eight points (three goals, five assists) in PC's two HOCKEY EAST wins against Boston University and earned HOCKEY EAST Player of the Week and U.S. College Hockey Online Offensive Player of the Week honors. On Oct. 30, Keefe recorded three assists in the Friars' 5-4 win against the Terriers at Schneider Arena. The following night, he led the Friar offense with his first career hat trick, scored the game-winning goal and added two assists in the Friars' 6-4 win at Walter Brown Arena. For Keefe, his five points against BU on Oct. 31 was a career high. He is tied for the team lead in points (12), goals (four) and assists (eight). In 58 career games, Keefe has registered 49 points (18 goals, 31 assists).
PISANI ADDS THREE ASSISTS... Junior right wing Fernando Pisani (Edmonton, Alberta) recorded three assists in PC's 6-1 win against UNH on Nov. 6 at Schneider Arena. The three assist effort marked his 17th career multiple-point game and third this season. The three assist effort also was the eighth time in his career he has recorded three or more points in a game. Last season, Pisani finished first on the team in goals (16) and second in scoring (34 points). In each of his first two years at PC, he has led the squad in plus/minus rating. A 1996 eighth-round draft pick of the Edmonton Oilers, Pisani has recorded 72 points (31 goals, 41 assists) in 77 career games.
SUDERMAN TALLIES FIRST COLLEGIATE GOAL... Freshman Marc Suderman (Regina, Saskatchewan) tallied his first collegiate goal in the Friars' 6-1 win against the UNH Wildcats on Nov. 6 at Schneider Arena. Suderman, who spent two seasons with the Lincoln Stars of the USHL prior to attending Providence, has two points (one goal, one assist) in six games for the Friars.
NEXT GAMES... The Friars will play two home games series against WCHA foe Minnesota-Duluth on Nov. 13-14. Both games will begin at 7:00 p.m.
THE PROVIDENCE-MINNESOTA-DULUTH SERIES... Friday's game will be the 19th meeting between the two schools. Minnesota-Duluth leads the all-time series 11-6-1. The two teams first met on Dec. 29, 1965 with the Bulldogs defeating the Friars, 4-1, at Brown University's Meehan Auditorium. PC's last win against the Bulldogs was a 3-0 victory at the Duluth Entertainment Center on Nov. 8, 1997. The Friars' last loss to Minnesota-Duluth was a 6-3 defeat on Nov. 11, 1988 at Duluth Arena.
AT SCHNEIDER ARENA... The Friars have posted a 2-2-1 record against Minnesota-Duluth at Schneider Arena. In the Bulldogs last appearance at Schneider Arena, the two teams skated to a 7-7 tie on Nov. 13, 1987. The Friars' last win against UMD at Schneider Arena was a 3-2 win in the NCAA Tournament on March 19, 1983. PC's last loss to the Bulldogs in Schneider Arena was a 6-0 shutout on Jan. 18, 1986. PC has never won a regular-season game against UMD at Schneider Arena.
LAST SEASON AGAINST MINNESOTA-DULUTH... Last season PC traveled to Duluth, Minn. and earned two wins against the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs on Nov. 7-8, 1997. On Nov. 7, PC defeated UMD, 6-5, in a thrilling overtime win. Jon Coe tallied two goals, including the game winner with one second remaining in overtime. Mike Omicioli , Fernando Pisani, Nick Sinerate and Jerry Keefe also scored for PC. Mark Kane recorded 31 stops and earned the win. The following night, Boyd Ballard made 24 saves and recorded a shutout in his second career start. Nick Lent, Mike Mader and Dave Gunderson each scored for PC.
