Volleyball Set To Open 2025 Season At The East Texas A&M Tournament On Friday

The Friars will face East Texas A&M, North Texas and University of Arkansas at Little Rock to open the season.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College volleyball team will begin its 2025 season at the East Texas A&M Tournament in Commerce, Texas. The Friars will open the tournament on Aug. 29 with two matches against East Texas A&M at 2:00 p.m. (ET) and North Texas at 5:00 p.m. (ET). On Aug. 30, Providence will play against University of Arkansas at Little Rock at 12:00 p.m. (ET). SCOUTING THE FRIARS… Providence finished the 2024 season with an 8-21 overall record and a 1-17 BIG EAST Conference record. The Friars are returning 10 players from last year's roster and have added five newcomers. Highlighting the returning core are juniors Lyric Berry (Wylie, Texas), Miller McDonald (Dallas, Texas), and Macy Taylor (Rowlett, Texas) and sophomore Sophia Adkins (Cincinnati, Ohio). Berry was second on the team in solo blocks (13) and total blocks (56) and ranked fifth on the team in kills (133). McDonald played in all 29 matches for the Friars and ranked first on the team in assists (686). Taylor played in all 29 matches, led the team in aces (28) and was fourth in kills (157). Adkins was third on the team in kills (169) and recorded double-digit kills in nine matches. 

 

Head Coach Margot Royer-Johnson is entering her 26th season at Providence College. Associate Head Coach Richard Gomes Jr. is entering his seventh season with the Friars.

 

SCOUTING EAST TEXAS A&M… The Lions finished their 2024 season with a 10-19 overall record and a 7-9 mark in the Southland Conference. A notable player returning to the Lions is Gracie Campbell. Campbell totaled 196 kills in the 2024 season. 

 

SCOUTING NORTH TEXAS… The Eagles went 10-18 overall and 7-9 in the American Athletic Conference in their 2024 season. Two key players returning for the Eagles are Ryan Vik and Kamryn Scroggins. Vik was named to the AAC All-Freshman Team and ranked 17th across all NCAA Division I freshmen in blocks per set (1.07). Scroggins led the team in assists (616) and digs (255).

 

SCOUTING UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS AT LITTLE ROCK… The Trojans finished their 2024 season with a 16-16 overall record and went 11-7 in the Ohio Valley Conference. Returning key players for the Trojans are Andrea Roman and Dariana Valencia. Roman was named to the All-OVC Second Team in 2024 and set a program record for single-season digs (624). Valencia led the team in assists (681). 

 

WHAT'S NEXT… The Providence College volleyball team will return home to Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. to host the Rhode Island Challenge. The Friars will face off against the University of Rhode Island on Friday, Sept. 5 at 4:00 p.m. Providence will then play Brown University on Saturday, Sept. 6 at 1:00 p.m. and Bryant University at 7:00 p.m. A full schedule of the tournament can be found at Friars.com by visiting the 2025 Providence College Volleyball schedule.
