COMMERCE, TEXAS- The Providence College volleyball team (1-0) defeated host East Texas A&M (0-1) in straight sets on Friday, August 29 in Commerce, Texas in the opening match of the East Texas A&M Tournament.
FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence earned a 27-25 victory in the first set.
- Providence came out quick with a 4-2 lead.
- After both teams traded points early, the set was tied, 10-10.
- Providence took the lead at 15-13 after a kill by Macy Taylor.
- East Texas A&M went on a 5-2 run to take an 18-17 lead.
- The teams went back-and-forth and were eventually tied, 24-24.
- Macy Taylor recorded a kill to give Providence a 26-25 lead.
- Kaia Easterbrook ended the set with a kill to secure a 27-25 win.
SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence won the second set, 25-14.
- The Friars went on a 10-4 run to begin set two.
- Providence extended its lead to 17-9 with an ace by Miller McDonald.
- The Friars went on a 5-1 run to bring the score to 22-10.
- Easterbrook had a kill to win the set at 25-14.
THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS: The Friars took the third set 25-19 and won the match 3-0.
- East Texas A&M opened the set with a 5-3 lead.
- The Friars responded with a 5-2 run to go ahead 10-7.
- East Texas A&M tied the set, 12-12.
- Providence pulled ahead at 20-18 with an ace by Taylor.
- The Friars went on a 5-1 run to win the set (25-19) and the match 3-0.
MATCH NOTES:
- Hadley Pride led the defense with 18 digs.
- Lyric Berry recorded 12 kills and eight blocks.
- McDonald had a double-double with 20 assists and 10 digs.
- The Friars notched 37 kills, 49 digs, 12 blocks, and eight aces.
