Last Time Out vs. Boston College
- The No. 6/4 Providence College men's ice hockey team fell to No. 2/2 Boston College, 4-1, on Saturday (Jan. 18) at Schneider Arena. Will Elger scored in the second period for the Friars.
- Boston College opened the scoring 7:06 into the first period, as Gabe Perrault put away a one-timer feed from James Hagens to put the Eagles ahead 1-0.
- The Eagles doubled their lead early in the second period on a tip-in effort from Jake Sondreal in front of the net, putting Boston College up 2-0.
- Providence got one back late in the second period, as Will Elger connected on a one-timer feed from Hudson Malinoski in the high slot, capitalizing on the power-play opportunity just three seconds into the man-advantage. Graham Gamache also collected an assist on the win in the face-off circle.
- Boston College regained their two-goal lead 8:02 into the third period, as Ryan Leonard caught a piece of a Lukas Gustafsson shot before redirecting it into the net on the power play.
- The Eagles tacked on their fourth goal of the night just over six minutes later when Teddy Stiga finished on a one-timer low glove-side to bring about the final 4-1 score.
- Twelve different Friars landed a shot on net, including five-shot performances from Will Elger, Trevor Connelly and Chase Yoder.
 
Scouting the River Hawks:
- UMass-Lowell (12-7-2, 5-5-1 HEA) enters their matchup with the Friars following a 3-2 overtime loss at home to Stonehill on Saturday (Jan. 18).
- Through 21 games this season, forward Scout Truman (8-7-15) leads the team in goals with eight, followed by both Owen Cole (6-7-13) and Chris Delaney (6-4-10) with six apiece.
- Forward Mirko Buttazzoni (5-10-15) paces the River Hawks in assists this season with 10, followed by defensemen Ben Meehan (2-9-11) and Nick Anderson (1-9-10) with nine each.
- Overall, both Truman and Buttazzoni lead the River Hawks in total points this season with 15 each, followed by Cole with 13 and three different players with 11 points on the year. In total, 22 different River Hawks have tallied a point this season, including nine players with 10+ points.
- In net, the River Hawks have split starts between senior netminder Beni Halasz and graduate student goaltender Henry Welsch. In nine games played, Halasz has led the River Hawks to a 3-3-1 record to the tune of a 2.13 goals against average and a .926 save percentage. Through 14 games this season, Welsch has posted a 9-4-1 record while posting a 2.50 goals against average and a .895 save percentage.

Series History vs. UMass-Lowell (67-51-11, .562)
This weekend's matchup with UMass-Lowell marks the first and second of three meetings between the Riverhawks and Friars this season. Since the 2021-22 season, Providence has earned a 5-2-0 record over the River Hawks and are currently riding a three game win streak, dating back to 7-2 Friars win in Lowell on Jan. 26, 2024. In that span, the Friars are a perfect 3-0-0 at home and 2-2-0 when facing the River Hawks at Tsongas Arena. The Friars and River Hawks will face off again on Feb. 22 at Schneider Arena.
 
Svedebäck Named Hockey East Goaltender of the Month/Mike Richter Award Watch List
Providence College junior Philip Svedebäck (Växjö, Sweden) was named Stop It Goaltending's Hockey East Goaltender of the Month for December on Friday, January 3. This marked Svedebäck's first-career monthly recognition as a Friar. Svedebäck led all Hockey East goaltenders in December with four wins. He stopped 79-of-87 shots he faced last month, good for a 2.00 GAA and .908 save percentage. Overall in 2024-25, Svedebäck is 11-4-1 with a 2.34 GAA and .916 save percentage in 16 games played. For the third-consecutive season, he was named to the Mike Richter Award Watch List for the top NCAA Division I goaltender.
 
Eight Former Friars Earn Spots On NHL Opening Night Rosters
The Friars boasted eight alums that appeared on NHL opening night rosters - Noel Acciari (PIT), Jacob Bryson (BUF), Vincent Desharnais (VAN), Brandon Duhaime (WSH), Mark Jankowski (NSH), Kevin Rooney (CGY), Brandon Tanev (SEA) and Jake Walman (SJ).
 
Callahan Makes NHL Debut
Former Friar captain Mike Callahan '22 made his NHL debut with the Boston Bruins on Jan. 14 against the Tampa Bay Lightning. He finished the night with a +1 rating in 14:11 of ice time.
 
Connelly Wins Gold With the U.S. At The 2025 World Junior Championship
Freshman Trevor Connelly won gold with the United States at 2025 World Junior Championship after their 4-3 overtime win over Finland in the gold medal game on Jan. 5. Connelly finished the tournament with one goal, three assists and a +3 rating over seven games.
 
Leaman Hits Milestone
Head Coach Nate Leaman earned his 249th career victory at Providence on Nov. 11, 2023, passing Lou Lamoriello as the program's winningest head coach all-time. On October 25, 2024, Leaman hit 400 career wins as a Division I head coach in Providence's 3-2 overtime win at Vermont. Leaman is the only Hockey East coach to post a winning record in each of the last 12 seasons.
 
Leading the Pack
Through 22 games this season, Tanner Adams (9-6-15) leads the Friars with nine goals on the year, followed by seven from both Logan Will (7-11-18) and Will Elger (7-6-13). Alongside Will, Andrew Centrella (2-11-13) headlines the team in assists with 11, followed by 10 from Taige Harding (1-10-11) and Austen May (0-10-10). Overall, Will paces the team with 18 points, followed by 15 from Adams, 14 from John Mustard (5-9-14), and 13 from Elger and Centrella. This season, 22 different Friars have tallied a point, including 11 players with 10+ points.
 
King of the Hill
Through 11 conference matchups, Providence (15-5-2, 5-4-2 HEA) sits in a four-way tie for fifth place in the Hockey East standings with 17 points, alongside Merrimack (9-13-1, 5-7-1 HEA), UMass-Lowell (12-7-2, 5-5-1 HEA), and Northeastern (9-10-3, 4-7-3 HEA). Boston University (13-7-1, 9-3-1 HEA) currently sits in first place with 28 points, followed by Boston College (16-4-1, 9-3-1 HEA) and Maine (15-5-3, 7-3-3 HEA) in a two-way tie for second with 26 points each and Connecticut (12-8-2, 7-6-2 HEA) with 24 points in fourth place. Providence has two games in hand on BU, BC, Maine, and Merrimack, three games in hand on Northeastern, and four games in hand on UConn.
 
Poisson Among Active Leaders
With an assist in the third period against Long Island University on Nov. 23, graduate student Nick Poisson became the 55th member of the program to reach the 100-point milestone. Poisson also scored the game-winning goal in the 4-3 win.
 
Quality Check
Following a pair of losses to No. 2/2 Boston College, the Friars fall to 5-5-0 in ranked matchups, including a 1-4-0 record in Hockey East action. This weekend, Providence faces No. 12/13 UMass-Lowell in a two-game home-and-home set.
 
Svedebäck, Richard, Adams Nominated for 2025 Hobey Baker Award
Providence College men's ice hockey junior goaltender Philip Svedebäck (Växjö, Sweden), senior defenseman Guillaume Richard (Cap-Sante, Que.), and sophomore forward Tanner Adams (Northport, N.Y.) were all named as nominees for the 2025 Hobey Baker Award on Wednesday (Jan. 22). In 16 games this season, Svedebäck has posted a 11-4-1 record alongside a 2.34 GAA and .916 save percentage. Richard has posted seven assists this season to go alongside a team-leading 31 blocked shots. Adams paces the Friars in goals this season with nine and ranks second in overall scoring with 15 points on the year.

The Friars are 229-24-25 all-time under Nate Leaman when scoring three or more goals in a game.
