Ryan Mela Named BIG EAST Freshman Of The Week

Mela earned the honor for the second consecutive week.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - It was announced today that Providence College freshman guard Ryan Mela (Natick, Mass.) was named BIG EAST Freshman Of The Week on Monday, Jan. 20.  It marks the second consecutive week that he has earned the league's Freshman of the Week honor.  Mela became the first Friar to earn the accolade multiple times in a season since A.J. Reeves was named Freshman of the Week three times in 2019. 

In his only game of the week, Mela scored 10 points, grabbed seven rebounds, added three assists and made one steal in the Friars' loss at Creighton on Jan. 14.  Mela was ill and did not play in the Friars' game at Villanova on Jan. 17.  For the season, Mela is averaging 5.4 points and 5.1 rebounds per game.

The Friars (9-10, 3-5 BIG EAST) will return to action versus Georgetown on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 12:30 p.m. on FOX.
