Women’s Soccer Set to Host Northeastern

The Friars will host Northeastern University on Sunday, Sept. 8 at 1:00 p.m.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's soccer team is set to host Northeastern University on Sunday, Sept. 8 at 1:00 p.m. on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium.

SCOUTING THE FRIARS... The Friars enter the week with a 2-2-0 record. Providence has wins over Rhode Island 1-0 and Holy Cross 2-1. The Friars went 0-1-1 last week with a 1-1 draw against FDU and a 2-1 loss against Army.  

  

Graduate student Kacey Lawrence (Monroe, Conn.) leads the Friars' offense with seven points through the first five games. Lawrence owns a team-best three goals and has contributed one assist.  

Freshman Kristin Middaugh (Lancaster, N.Y.) and freshman Stephanie Schoeley (Thedford, Ontario) have each scored one goal for the Friars.  

Goalkeepers Emma Bodmer (Monroe Township, N.J.) and Ellie Thallman (Northville, Mich.) have combined for 16 saves for the Friars and have one shutout. The duo have split time in net this season, each logging 225 minutes of action.  

  

TWO MEMBERS OF THE FRIARS QUALIFY FOR THE 2024 FIFA UNDER-20 WORLD CUP… Junior Ella McBride (Peterborough, Canada) and Sophomore Kayla Briggs (Toronto, Canada) have qualified for the U-20 FIFA World Cup 2024 and will represent Canada's National Team. Canada is 1-0-1 in group B. They tied France 3-3 and defeated Fiji 9-0. In their latest match against Fiji, McBride recorded one goal and a team-high two assists. Briggs scored two goals and recorded one assist in the match. Canada will close out group B play against Brazil Friday.  

KAYLA BRIGGS NAMED TO PRESEASON ALL-BIG EAST TEAM... Kayla Briggs received preseason recognition as a member of the Preseason ALL-BIG EAST Team. The BIG EAST released its 2024 Preseason Coaches' Poll and preseason honors Tuesday (Aug. 13). 

BIG EAST PRESEASON COACHES POLL... Providence women's soccer was picked to finish fifth in the 2024 BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll with 66 points. Providence finished last season with a 4-1-5 record in conference play. The Friars finished fourth in the BIG EAST Last season and reached the BIG EAST Tournament Semi-Final. The Friars are coming off their second NCAA Tournament appearance in the last three years. 

TOP RETURNERS...  

The Friars return three All-BIG EAST players this season. Kayla Briggs (Toronto, Canada) was named to the ALL-BIG EAST Second Team after her strong rookie campaign. She finished fourth on the team in points with, nine on two goals and five assists. Briggs was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week Aug. 21 and BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week Oct. 16. Returners Emma Bodmer (Monroe Township, N.J.) and Gillian Kenney (Hanover, Mass.) were named to the ALL-BIG EAST third team last season. Bodmer helped the Friars to eight clean sheets and lead the BIG EAST in save percentage (.905), only allowing four goals. Kenney's finished second the team with 13 points on five goals and one assist.  

   

NEWCOMERS… Providence welcomes nine student-athletes to the program this season including two graduate transfers, two junior transfers and six freshmen. The graduate transfers include Kacey Lawerence (Monroe, Conn.) and Ellie Thallman (Northville, Mich.). The Junior transfers include Brooke Haarala (Framingham, Mass.) and Olivia Allen (Holland Landing, Ontario).   

  

The incoming freshman class includes Kelly Stepnowski (Glastonbury, Conn.), Amaya Coffie (Warwick, R.I.), Stephanie Schoeley (Thedford, Ontario), Caitlyn Gratton (Hamilton, Ontario), Lily Gibbs (Dedham, Mass.) and Kirstin Middaugh (Lancaster, N.Y.).  

  

SERIES HISTORY AGAINST NORTHEASTERN... The Friars hold a 3-3-1 all-time record against the Huskies. In their last meeting, the Friars won 2-1 (OT) in Providence, R.I. in 2019.   

  

SCOUTING THE HUSKIES... Northeastern enters Thursday's contest with a 0-2-2 record. This past weekend, the Huskies were defeated by No. 18 Harvard, 4-0. The Huskies will visit UMass on Thursday before they face the Friars this weekend. Northeastern was picked fourth in the CAA Coaches Poll receiving one first-place vote.  

  

The Huskies have two different goal scorers this season. Fifth year Jessie Hunt has scored one goal this season. She earned Preseason All-CAA honors this season and has been selected to the All-CAA First Team the past two seasons. Freshman Lughano Nyondo also contributed one goal this season. Graduate student Faith Rosenblatt was recognized as a CAA Preseason Honorable Mention. Goalkeeper Eliza Teplow has a save percentage of 0.759 this season. The Huskies have been outscored 7-2 by their opponents this season.  

UP NEXT... The Friars will travel across town to face Brown on Thursday, Sept. 12 at 1:00 p.m. on Stevenson-Pincince Field in Providence, R.I.
