Providence College Volleyball Falls To Villanova In Five Sets

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College volleyball team was defeated by Villanova, 3-2, in BIG EAST action on Saturday, Oct. 19 at Alumni Hall. The Friars took the first two sets of the match. Villanova responded with victories in three straight sets to win the match 3-2. The Friars dropped to 7-12 overall (0-8 BIG EAST), while Villanova improved to 12-7 (5-3 BIG EAST).
 
FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence earned a 29-27 victory in the first set.
  • The Wildcats got out to a 7-3 lead.
  • Providence went on an 8-4 rally to tie the match, 11-11.
  • The two teams remained tied at 17-17.
  • The Friars went on a 3-0 run take a 19-17 lead, forcing Villanova to call a timeout.  
  • The teams went back-and-forth to reach a 24-24 tie.
  • The Friars claimed set one 29-27.
SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence won the second set, 27-25.
  • The Friars and Wildcats exchanged points to reach a 4-4 tie.
  • Villanova went on a 7-2 run to take a 10-6 advantage, forcing Providence to take a timeout.
  • Providence went on a 8-4 run to tie the set 14-14.
  • The Friars took a late 21-18 lead.
  • The Friars held on to win the set 27-25.
THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS: Villanova took the third set, 25-18.
  • The two teams played evenly to reach a 4-4 tie.
  • Villanova went on a 5-1 run to take a 9-5 lead, forcing the Friars to take a timeout.
  • The Wildcats maintained their lead through the middle of the set (16-10).
  • Villanova won the set 25-18.
FOURTH SET HIGHLIGHTS: Villanova won the fourth set, 25-14.
  • The Wildcats got out to a quick 7-3 lead.
  • Villanova extended its lead to 14-8, forcing the Friars to call a timeout.
  • Kayla Grant recorded a kill to bring the score to 20-12.
  • The Wildcats won set three, 25-13, to force a fifth set.
FIFTH SET HIGHLIGHTS: Villanova won the fifth set, 17-15 and won the match 3-2.
  • Villanova jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead.
  • The Friars chipped away to narrow the Wildcat's lead to 8-6.
  • The Wildcats responded by extending their lead to 11-7.  
  • Providence went on a 5-1 run to tie the set 12-12.
  • Villanova won the fifth set 17-15 and the match 3-2.
 
MATCH NOTES:
Shaliyah Rhoden led the Friars offense with 21 kills.
Macy Taylor recorded 23 digs and 14 kills.
The Friars recorded 63 kills, 67 digs, six blocks and seven aces.
