Volleyball Falls To St. Johns In Straight Sets

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College volleyball team was defeated by St. John's, 3-0, in BIG EAST action on Friday, Oct. 18 at Alumni Hall. The Friars dropped to 7-11 overall (0-7 BIG EAST), while St. John's improved to 14-7 (3-4 BIG EAST).
 
FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS: St. John's earned a 25-23 victory in the first set.
  • The two teams went back-and-forth to reach a tie score of 8-8.
  • The Friars went on 4-0 run to take a 12-8 lead, forcing St. John's to take a timeout.
  • The Red Storm responded with an 8-4 run to tie the set 16-16.
  • Providence and St. John's exchanged kills to keep the match tied (23-23).
  • St. John's took set one 25-23.
SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS: St. John's won the second set, 27-25.
  • The two teams played evenly to reach an 11-11 tie.
  • St. John's went on an 8-1 run to take a 18-11 advantage, forcing Providence to take a timeout.
  • The Friars chipped away and narrowed the Red Storm's lead to 21-19.
  • Lyric Berry recorded a kill to tie the set 24-24.
  • The Red Storm held on to win the set 27-25.
THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS: St. John's took the third set, 25-20.
  • St. John's took an early 8-4 lead, forcing Providence to call a timeout.
  • The Red Storm extended its lead to 15-8 and forced Providence to call a timeout.
  • Shaliyah Rhoden recorded a block to bring the score to 20-13.
  • The Friars went on a 6-2 run to narrow St. John's lead to 22-19.
  • St. John's maintained its lead and won the set 25-20.
MATCH NOTES:
Jiji Lykins led the defense with 13 digs.
Macy Taylor and Shaliyah Rhoden led the Friars with 10 kills.
The Friars recorded 36 kills, 41 digs, seven blocks and six aces.
