Field Hockey Claims 1-0 Victory Over Long Island University

Celia Preveza scored the game-winning goal 42-seconds into regulation.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College field hockey team earned a 1-0 victory over Long Island University on Sunday, Sept. 3 at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. It marked Providence's second-consecutive shutout victory as the squad improved to 2-2 on the year. LIU dropped to 0-3 on the season.
 
1ST QUARTER:
• Providence took an early 1-0 lead 42-seconds into the action as Celia Preveza scored her first goal of the season (third of her career). She collected a loose ball off a blocked pass and fired a low shot into the back of the cage.
 
2ND QUARTER:
• Providence maintained its 1-0 lead into halftime.
• Through the opening half of play, Providence outshot LIU, 3-2, including a 2-0 advantage in shots on goal. 
• Providence also recorded two penalty corners in the first half.
 
3RD QUARTER:
• Providence outshot LIU 3-1 in the third quarter and held a 3-0 edge in penalty corners.
• The Friars carried their 1-0 lead into the final 15 minutes of action.
 
4TH QUARTER:
• Both teams recorded one shot in the fourth quarter and Providence added one penalty corner.
 
NOTES:
Asia Porter recorded her second-consecutive shutout of the season with two saves.
• Fleur Hofman collected three saves in goal for the Sharks.
• For the game, Providence held the advantage in shots (8-4), shots on goal (4-2) and penalty corners (6-0).
• Preveza's goal marked the first game winner of her career with the Friars.
• Providence improved to 2-2 on the season, with both victories coming as shutouts.
• Providence is 2-0 at Lennon Family Field this season.
• The Friars will play eight of their next nine games on their home field, including each of the next four matches.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• Providence will continue its six-game homestand next weekend when it welcomes New Hampshire and Brown to Lennon Family Field. The Friars and Wildcats are slated to play on Friday, Sept. 8 at 4:00 p.m. The Friars close the weekend with Brown on Sunday, Sept. 10 at 1:00 p.m.
