PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Providence College's track athletes
Marcelo Rocha (Peabody, Mass.),
Shannon Flockhart (Longstanton, England),
Kimberley May (Auckland, New Zealand), and
Jane Buckley (Cork, Ireland) will travel to Mike E. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas to compete at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship, which will take place June 7-10. Rocha will run the finals of the 10,000 meters, which will begin at 10:08 p.m. ET on Wednesday, June 7. On Thursday, June 8 Flockhart and May will compete in the 1,500 meters semifinals at 8:46 p.m. ET. The 1,500 meters finals will be held on Saturday, June 10 at 9:12 p.m. ET. Buckley will run in the 5,000 meters finals at 10:55 p.m. ET on Saturday, June 10.
This will be Rocha's second time competing at the NCAA Championship. At the 2021 NCAA Championship, he ran a personal best of 28:37.05 in the 10,000 meters for 18
th place. Rocha finished seventh in a time of 29:05.20 at the NCAA First Round on May 24 to qualify for the NCAA Championship. Over the course of the outdoor season, he posted a win in the 5,000 meters at the Friar Invitational and he won the College Men's 10,000-Meter Championship at Penn Relays.
Flockhart returns to the Championship as she made the NCAA 1,500 meters final in the 2022 outdoor season. At last year's finals, Flockhart placed seventh overall to earn First Team All-America Honors. This year, Flockhart won her heat in the 1,500 meters first round on May 25 at the NCAA First Round in Jacksonville, Fla. in a time of 4:15.92. She then won her quarterfinal heat on May 27 in a time of 4:11.51, which automatically qualified her for the upcoming semifinal round. Flockhart opened this outdoor season at the Friar Invitational where she won the mile, followed by winning the 1,500-meters at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championship in 4:14.46 that qualified her for the NCAA First Round.
May will join Flockhart this year at the Championship in competing in the 1,500 meters. May qualified for the 1,500 meters quarterfinals by running a 4:21.10 to place second in her heat at the NCAA First Round. She then placed fifth in her quarterfinal heat in a time of 4:14.83 to automatically qualify for the semifinals. Throughout the season, May placed sixth in the 1,500 meters at the Raleigh Relays in a time of 4:13.24 that qualified her for the NCAA First Round. She also won the 800 meters at the Friar Invitational and placed third in the 800 meters at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championship.
Buckley will compete in the 5,000 meters final round at the Championship. She qualified at the NCAA's semifinal by placing seventh in her heat in the 5,000 meters in a time of 15:41.68. Buckley began her collegiate track career at the Raleigh Relays where she finished eighth in the 5,000 meters in a time of 15:46.24, which earned her a spot in the first round of the NCAA's. She then won the 3,000 meters at the Friar Invitational and ran the 5,000 meters in 15:55.10 for third place at the BIG EAST Outdoor Track Championships.
