Volleyball Defeated Georgetown In Five Sets

Shaliyah Rhoden had 17 kills for the Friars.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Providence College volleyball defeated Georgetown, 3-2, on Friday, October 6 in Washington, D.C. The Friars lost the first two sets before storming back to win three straight sets to register their first BIG EAST win of the season.
 
FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS: Georgetown won the first set, 25-16.
- The two teams went back-and-forth to start the set to make it 4-4.
- The Hoyas went on a 9-3 run to take a 13-7 lead causing the Friars to call a timeout. 
- Georgetown held onto their lead for the rest of the set winning, 25-16.
- Kayla Grant (Rowlett, Texas) and Lyric Berry (Wylie, Texas) each had three kills in the first set.
 
SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS: The Hoyas won the second set, 25-23, for the 2-0 advantage in the set.
- Georgetown got off to a quick 4-1 lead to start the second set. 
- The Friars went on a 6-2 run to tie the set at 11-11. 
- Providence took a 16-14 lead, forcing Georgetown to call a timeout. 
- The Hoyas went on 5-1 run late in the set to tie it at 19-19.
- Georgetown closed out the set earning a 25-23 win.
- Alicja Pokrzywa (Parsippany, N.J.) recorded three digs in the second set.
 
THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS: The Friars won the third set, 25-22.
- Providence got off to a 5-4 lead to start the third set.
- The Hoyas went on an 8-4 run to take the 12-9 lead. 
- The Friars then went on a 6-1 run to take back the lead at 15-13.
- Providence extended its lead to 20-17 late in the set, which led to a Georgetown timeout.
- The Friars held the lead the rest of the set and earned the 25-22 win.
- Macy Taylor (Rowlett, Texas) tallied five kills in the third set.
 
FOURTH SET HIGHLIGHTS: Friars won the fourth set, 27-25, to force a fifth set.
- The two teams went back-and-forth to start the set at 6-6.
- The Friars went on an 8-3 run to take a 14-9 lead in the set.
- The Hoyas scored five unanswered points late in the set to tie it at 22-22.
- The Friars went on a 5-3 run to close the set and win, 27-25.
-Taylor registered six kills in the fourth set.
 
FIFTH SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence won the final set,15-10, to capture the match.
- Providence got off to a 7-5 lead to start the final set.
- The Friars extended their lead to 11-6, forcing Villanova to call a timeout.
- The Friars held onto their lead and won the set, 15-10
- Shaliyah Rhoden (Rowlett, Texas) had four kills in the final set.
 
MATCH NOTES:
- Rhoden led the Friars' offense with 17 kills.
- Pokrzywa recorded a team-high 13 digs.
- Berry registered 4.5 blocks for Providence.
