DURHAM, N.H. – The Providence College field hockey team fell to New Hampshire, 3-1, in Durham, N.H. on Sept. 2. The Friars dropped to 0-3 on the season, while the Wildcats improved to 3-0.
1ST QUARTER:
• The first quarter ended in a scoreless tie, 0-0.
• The Friars recorded the first shot of the afternoon, but the Wildcats completed the quarter with a 4-1 advantage in shot attempts.
• Providence goalkeeper
Asia Porter collected one save in the opening 15 minutes of action.
2ND QUARTER:
• UNH took a 1-0 lead at 22:12 as Nicole Poulakis finished off an opportunity at the right post, assisted by Tasmis Cookman.
• On the Friars' next offensive possession,
Sophia Pompeo challenged the Wildcats' goalkeeper, but her effort was turned away.
• The Wildcats earned a penalty corner with one-second remaining on the clock, looking to mount a two-goal advantage, but Porter denied the effort for her second save of the game.
• At halftime, UNH held a 1-0 lead and posted advantages in shots (7-2), shots on goal (3-1) and corners (3-1).
3RD QUARTER:
• Pompeo cashed in for her first goal of the year to tie the game, 1-1, at 38:52 in the third.
Ally DeCoste was credited with the assist as she dove for the ball during transition and redirected it into the circle for Pompeo's tally.
• Poulakis earned her second goal of the day at 42:53, unassisted, to help the Wildcats regain the lead (2-1)
• UNH carried it's one-goal lead into the fourth quarter.
4TH QUARTER:
• At 49:18, Leah Glidden gave the Wildcats a 3-1 edge as she one-timed a feed from the middle of the circle into the back of the cage. She was assisted by Cookman.
• From that point, the Friars developed several scoring opportunities, outshooting UNH 3-1 down the stretch, but could not convert.
• Providence outshot UNH 5-4 in the fourth quarter.
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Porter finished the day with five saves for the Friars.
• UNH goalkeeper Jemma Woods made four stops in the cage to secure the win.
• The Wildcats finished the game with advantages in shots (17-9), shots on goal (8-5) and corners (6-2).
• Providence is scheduled to play its first six games on the road before hosting BIG EAST foe Villanova in its 2022 home opener at Lennon Family Field on Sept. 16.
• Seven of the Friars' 17 regular-season opponents are currently ranked in the NFHCA Division I National Coaches' Poll.
